Alliteration
Definition: A series of words that start with the same repeating sound. (Really note how I wrote “sound” and not “letter”!). Alliteration helps make writing more interesting by giving it more rhythm and flow. It can also emphasize certain features about what is said.
Examples:
“Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.”
This is a really popular alliteration. Notice how most of the words start with the same sound. This is what makes it a tongue-twister!
How many times fast can you read out this entire picture? :)
“The gentle giant jollily jumped with joy.”
Even though different letters are being used (g and j), this is still an example of alliteration because those letters make the same sound (juh).
Self-Reflection
What makes an alliteration? Can you think of your own examples?
What do you think you’re a rockstar at?
What still confuses you?
Please check in with your partner(s) and/or teacher before moving on!
Good work :)
