Hyperboles
Definition: Exaggerate the meaning of a sentence. Think of the prefix “hyper” (meaning more than usual or normal) to help you remember what hyperboles are.
Examples:
“I died laughing!”
Have you ever laughed so hard that you couldn’t breathe?
This hyperbole is another way to say that something was really funny!
It’s an exaggeration because we don’t actually die every time we laugh really hard. If we did, yikes!
“I’m so tired, I could sleep for a whole year!”
Have you ever felt so tired that you felt like you could sleep for a long time?
This hyperbole is another way to say just that!
It’s an exaggeration because the average person can’t actually sleep for a whole year, no matter how tired they feel.
