Welcoming a Teacher Candidate to your School

Dear Building Leaders and Staff,

Thank you for hosting a future Portland Public Schools teacher. HERE is a link to the Educator Pathways’ Google Site, where you will find many resources, including the Educator Pathways Handbook. During this hectic time, please help our Teacher Candidates feel welcome and have a strong start serving our students. Below are some ways to welcome a Teacher Candidate to your school community.

Make sure the Teacher Candidate (TC) has completed the requirements to get a PPS email account. They should not contact OTIS for questions.
- OTIS SIS Team adds Teacher Candidates to the school staff
- OTIS SIS Team creates Teacher Candidates TVUE account
- A ticket is created in the Teacher Candidates name with their Synergy login credentials, and the School Admin Assistant is cc'd on this email and provided instructions
- The School Admin Assistant then adds the teacher Candidates to the needed sections
- The School Admin Assistant answers any school-based questions
- If Teacher Candidates have not received their PPS email account, they contact teachercandidateplacement@pps.net.

Introduce them to staff, parents, and community members.

Include the TC in your staff email list.

Provide a campus tour: Point out campus maps with emergency exit routes, staff bathrooms, staff lounge, workrooms, mailboxes, and Pony.

Show them how to use the copy machine and other technology as needed.

Let the TC know where they can park and if there are restricted areas they can not park.

Provide them with an access card (Green Substitute Card) to the building. Their Teacher Candidate Badges do not give them access to the PPS building.

Please include TC in staff meetings, PLCs and other professional learning opportunities. Teacher Candidates are required to participate in a minimum of 12 PPS Professional Learning opportunities while completing their Student Teaching Experience.

Teacher Candidate Substituting Guidelines

We understand that your school may struggle to cover classrooms when a substitute job is unfilled. As a reminder, Teacher Candidates (Student Teachers) cannot be pulled from their clinical experiences to cover classrooms. Clinical experience hours are documented and required for the Teacher Candidate’s university program and TSPC licensure.

Please note that a Teacher Candidate’s student teaching experience may include solo instruction, as outlined by their university program. These experiences must occur under the supervision of a fully licensed professional educator, as mandated by the Teacher Candidate's program, PPS policy, and TSPC.

Teacher Candidates are not authorized to substitute unless they have been cleared by PPS as a Restricted Substitute Educator. This includes covering absences for their Cooperating Teacher Leader and/or covering classes not picked up by a substitute. There must be a fully licensed teacher on-site, assigned to the Teacher Candidate’s class at all times.
