Week 12

11.22.19

PAINT! This was a great week for our artists because we FINALLY worked with PAINT! Even better, we did a crayon resist to make our names and shapes magically appear. We practiced gentle use of paintbrushes and steps to keep paint water from spilling everywhere. Clean up routines, sharing, and paint brush hot tubs made for a busy busy day in art. It sure looks like kids from Mrs. McQueen's class enjoyed the process.

Sketchbooks come home this week, and I hope you enjoy looking through them as much as I did. Share them with family over the holidays, and continue to encourage creativity in your children. Happy Thanksgiving all!

Week 10-11

11.14.19

Monsters! We've been refining our collage skills lately, and started with some monster sketches. We learned that the word "collage" is French for "sticky". We learned to use our glue AROUND the edges, and we practiced "massaging" our paper once we glued. The sketches are from Mrs. Roth's class, and the collages from Mrs. Wendt's.

Students are enjoying choosing stations to work in each week. There is always a drawing or sketching station, we review two stations like oil pastels or games/puzzles, and collage is our new station recently. These themes rotate during the year and it's always interesting to see which stations students choose.

Sketchbooks are filling up and will be coming home soon! Stay tuned!

Week 6

10.8.19

Model Magic!

This magical stuff was a super huge hit with our Kinders! We drew donuts (which I love) during or warm-ups, and read My Heart to talk about how art makes us feel. We learned about sculpture, patterns, and texture using Model Magic. Mrs. Pionke's class really, really loved art today!

Week 5

10.2.19

We are back to working at stations this week, and one of those stations has my favorite puzzle. Puzzles help children observe details more closely than they otherwise would. Puzzles kept Mrs. Roth's students engaged and focused on work for an extended time, building stamina.

Week 4

9.26.19

Wow! I couldn't have asked for a better group of kids to showcase our sketchbook work that we do at the beginning of each class. They are so focused! After our whale drawing and our book "Charlotte and the Rock," we finished up our collage work for Square One Art. You will hear more about this fundraiser in the future, but sneak a peek at new items to order HERE. Thanks to Mrs. McQueen's class for being great workers today!

Week 3

9.16.19

Mrs. Pionke's class got a great start on their Square One art collages this week. We are learning so many things! "First I trace, then I cut, next I color, last I glue." We read Elmer for a little inspiration with color and pattern.

Week 2

9.12.19

This week we kept practicing routines and I'm happy to say they are catching on! We added glue sticks and more stencils to our stations. While exploring shapes, our kindergarten artists have been sharing, moving safely around the art room, and helping each other problem solve. It is a beautiful thing to witness! These slides are of some artists in Mrs. McQueen's class.

Week 1

9.6.19

I'm really enjoying spending time with our newest artists! Our kindergarten students started learning our art class routines. Your children will be using sketchbooks at the beginning of each class, and once they are full, I will send them home to be admired.

This week we met Henri Matisse from France, explored puzzles, tracing, cutting, and sketching. It was a fun and busy day in Art! Here's a preview of Ms. Wendt's artists.

Welcome to Art!

This is me and my kiddo on our summer vacation. I hope you are all ready for a super fun year in kindergarten art!

This year students will be learning some fundamentals of design, techniques, materials, and artistic decision making. To help this process we will have a routine of sketching, story, demonstration, work time, and share time. That's a lot to pack into each class! Demonstrations will be short and sweet, one technique, material, or skill at a time. Students will have a variety of options during work time to help enhance that skill. This could be anything from drawing, sculpting, games, or more. Students can choose their stations, and how long they work at each station. Each spot will help develop the skill for the day.

Because students will have more choice, they may not come home with the same art projects as their classmates! Displays in the hallway will have more variety! Each student will have a chance to learn in a way they feel successful.

At the end of they year, the goal is for our kindergarteners to be ready to level up to first grade knowing vocabulary, routines, and skills that will help them in a new environment. If you have questions at anytime, you can always email me, that's the fastest way to reach me. Otherwise I will make myself available for phone calls during the office hours listed below.

Let's have an amazing year in art!

Square 1 Art

Square One Art is a unique and creative fundraiser featuring your child's own artwork! Each year in grades K-5, your student will create a piece of artwork specifically for this project. You will have the opportunity to order a variety of gifts like coffee mugs, potholders, magnets, calendars, etc. (As a parent myself, the items are of a quality nice enough for gifting.)

The fundraiser is organized by our awesome PAD parent club, and they are in charge of distributing proceeds that help support our students.  Your artist will come home with order forms in early November with more information. Stay tuned!

Practice Boards

In an effort to reduce paper this year, we added a number of white boards to our kindergarten art room. These will be used to practice drawings as a group, and for artists who finish their artwork early. So far students have been treating these new boards with the greatest combination of respect and curiosity.

Greetings friends of our littlest artists! This year we are exploring what is was like to live and make art in the times of kings, queens, dragons and castles. We will read enchanting stories and bring home colorful projects. First off, we are creating our crowns and drawing our Royal Portraits. Because we will be using these two projects later in the year, they may not come home right away. Please enjoy photos of your students work under their teachers page.
