Each AVID course has different curriculum relevant to the particular grade level but the course Core Elements are consistent program wide.
Students meet weekly with college tutors to answer questions they have in their academic classes. The night before tutorial students review their academic notes and determine a point of confusion in one subject area. The next day during our AVID class, students are grouped by subject area with a college tutor and use the inquiry process to present their questions and help each other answer their points of confusion. This practice continues year round and helps students practice inquiry, critical thinking, public speaking, and note-taking.
Students take 5 pages of notes in at least 2 academic classes per week. In addition, students are taught to revise (study) their notes in a variety of ways with the expectation this is done each night. Each week, college tutors check students' notes and planners to help students build strong and consistent note-taking, studying and time-management habits.
Each week, students email screenshots of their grades to their parents and college tutors. This helps build accountability, academic awareness and collaboration.
