AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is both a class and a program. But really, it is so much more. It is a journey.
WESTVIEW AVID the class
AVID is a G-elective, 10 credit class. This means that it counts towards a student's college admissions and is worth the same amount of credits as other classes at Westview.
AVID classes are grade specific: AVID 1-2 is for freshmen, AVID 3-4 is for sophomores, AVID 5-6 is for juniors and AVID Senior Seminar is for seniors. Each class has specific, grade level curriculum that prepares students for the next level.
Curriculum focuses on 1) helping students succeed in their core academic classes by teaching and practicing effective note-taking, study techniques, annotation strategies, inquiry methods, time-management and collaboration AND 2) increasing student's knowledge of college, admissions, financial aid, majors, career paths and current events.

WESTVIEW AVID the program
AVID is also a program that encourages students to grow beyond their academic successes. Students join Westview AVID in either their freshman or sophomore year and remain in the program through their senior year.
Our AVID program focuses on three main areas of growth beyond the classroom:
College Going Family: Over the course of their high school journey, AVID students will take field trips and visit 9+ colleges across California (including an overnight trip!). This not only increases their college knowledge but creates a trusted group of peers students can turn to for help and inspiration.
Commitment and Community: AVID students are encouraged and assisted in finding their passion - whether it be sports, the arts, service, business or anything else - and committing time and hard work to it. Part of this commitment is an annual community service requirement that AVID helps each student curate.
Fun: It's all about balance - college, academics, planning for the future can all be a bit heavy so we purposefully build in opportunities for students to have fun with each other, their tutors, and teachers. Whether it is our Homecoming AVID Competition, Pie-a-Teacher or Senior Banquet, there is always something happening for students to look forward to and just have fun.
