Privacy and Safety Resources

Student data privacy is always at the forefront of our minds when assessing software solutions and services. PUSD is a member of the California Student Privacy Alliance which is a group of school districts in California that are creating standardized language for Data Privacy Agreements. Zoom has signed this agreement with a number of Districts in California, including PUSD, which supersedes any language Zoom may add or change to their standard Privacy Policy as posted on their website. Zoom’s K-12 Schools & Districts Privacy Policy is in compliance with the requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (“COPPA”), the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”), the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”), and other applicable law.

If you are planning on video conferencing with your students and parents, consider configuring settings that will block users who attempt to interrupt your online meetings and ensure the safety of your students. PUSD recommends teachers use the following settings in order to ensure safety.


  • Enable a “Password” for your meeting to ensure participants were invited.

  • Enable Mute Participants upon entry so you can set expectations from the start.

  • Confirm “Waiting Room” is enabled to allow you (host) to review and allow participant access to the meeting.

  • Confirm “Join Before Host” is disabled so people can’t access your meeting before you.

  • Disable “File Transfer” so there’s no digital file-sharing between participants.

  • Confirm “Allow Removed Participants to Rejoin” is disabled so removed attendees can’t join back in.

  • Disable “Private Chat” to prevent anyone from getting unwanted messages.

  • Mute” participants who are making unwanted, distracting, or inappropriate noises.

  • Prevent participants from “Screen Sharing” during an online meeting to prevent disruptions and the sharing of unwanted content.
