Today we're talking copyrights and fair use. Don't know what that means exactly? YOU NEED TO! It's 2019 and I do not want you going to jail or paying insane fines over something as easily avoided as this.
Today's Goal: Work collaboratively to organize your research into a clearn and complete research paper.
Agenda:
Copyright/Fair Use
The internet is a wonderful thing, but it can also be dangerous when it is not used properly. It's very important that you understand copyright laws and fair use in order to avoid any misconduct on your part when using images or other information that you got from the internet. Watch the two YouTube videos here to get a better understanding of what these terms mean and how they are used in education.
Good news! www.photosforclass.com makes it SO EASY! This website finds images that are licensed under Creative Commons and automatically builds in the appropriate citation. Bookmark it on your Google Chrome browser NOW.
Research Paper Work Time
You're all at different stages of the writing process right now, so you're going to need to use this time to do whatever makes sense for your group. Remember, you need to have the Hyperdoc turned in on Google Classroom no later than Monday.
Ideally, I'd like to see everyone come to class on Monday with your first draft of your Research Paper complete. Instructions for how to format and write your paper are on Google Classroom.
Review the rubric here to make sure that your paper is meeting all of the necessary requirements as you write.
HOMEWORK: Try to have your Research paper Rough Draft completed by Monday so you can use Monday's class time to revise/edit!
My friends, we have some WORK to do today. I'm not sure if it's because it was Friday, or if it was because I wasn't there to hover over you, but I'm looking at the research you've logged so far and we've got quite a ways to go before this can be a fully formed research paper. Here's the good news: I'm back and here to help. We can do hard things. Let's go.
Today's Goal: Extend our research to develop a fully formed outline in order to prepare to write our Research Papers.
Agenda:
Reading Time
You have a One-Pager due THIS FRIDAY, 29 March 2019. (This should not be news...)
You'll have 20 minutes to read in class today. Reminder, you're welcome to turn in your one-pager early if you're already finished with your current independent reading book. This is your last major assignment of the school year, which means it's your last chance to raise your grade! Take your time and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Research Hyperdoc: Steps 3-5
Oh boy, my friends. You’ve got a lot of work to do.
Remember, the whole point of this research is for you to be able to write an entire research paper on your topic. “I learned that fires are dangerous,” IS NOT GOING TO CUT IT.
If you’re finished with your research, and I have approved of it, you may use today to move on to Steps 4 and 5. If you need to go back and re-work your research, you're spending today doing that. Either way, you’ll need to have Steps 4 and 5 completed by the time you come to class on Thursday.
HOMEWORK:
I know, I'm late posting today. It's been a chaotic week. Thank you all for being patient and understanding with your crazy teacher! I got a wonderful review from the substitute, so I appreciate you all taking advantage of this class period to really buckle down and get to researching!
Today's Goal: Work collaboratively to collect information from valid sources to effectively answer your research questions.
Agenda:
Research Hyperdoc: Step 3
Last class you had a little bit of time to start the research process. Today, you're going to have a LOT of time. I expect you to really dig deep today. A few things to keep in mind:
If you do not finish all of your research in class, please use the weekend to complete your research and finish Step 3 before coming to class on Tuesday.
It's research time, people! Today's a minimum day, so we won't have TOO much time to start digging into research, but we'll start the process today and continue on into more research on Friday!
Today's Goal: Begin utilizing the tools that are available to us to research assigned topics in order to find answers to essential questions.
Agenda:
Reading Time
You have a One-Pager due next Friday, 29 March 2019. (This should not be news...)
You'll have 15 minutes to read in class today. Reminder, you're welcome to turn in your one-pager early if you're already finished with your current independent reading book. This is your last major assignment of the school year, which means it's your last chance to raise your grade! Take your time and FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Research Hyperdoc: Step 3
Last class you met with your assigned partner to narrow down your topics and develop essential questions to guide your research. Today, you get to actually start the research process!! A few things to keep in mind:
I will not be here on Friday, due to the Spring Dance. However, you're going to have the entire class period to work on continuing the research process! Please remember to use the Hyperdoc to track the information that you've found. Use EasyBib or the Citation Generator in GALE to create the MLA Citation. GOOD LUCK!
Today's the big day! Today you will be learning who you will be working with and what you will be researching. Then, you'll work collaboratively with your new partners to begin developing focused and effective research questions to guide your research.
Today's Goal: Work collaboratively to develop essential questions to guide your research.
Agenda:
Reading Time
You have a One-Pager due on March 29th. That's in 2 weeks. Don't ever tell me you "don't have time to read." Make time. I'll help by making at least 20 minutes for you. You're welcome. Enjoy.
Research Project Hyperdoc
Log into Google Classroom and click on the assignment titled "Research Project Hyperdoc." You'll see two Google Docs.
Today, you're only job is to work through Step 1 and Step 2. I'll be coming around to help. If you were absent today, make sure to check your assignment and thank your partners for all the hard work they did while you were out.
HOMEWORK:
Remember that Research Project you've got coming up? Well, it's probably pretty important that you learn HOW to research effectively, right? Poway Unified has SO many awesome resources to help you with your research, so today you're going to be learning all about them from a true expert.
Today's Goal: Practice using tools to help with effective and focused research.
Agenda:
Computer Lab Research Activity
There's a HUGE difference between research and GOOD research. Today, my friend Mrs. Uyloan, our school librarian, is going to walk you through some of the resources you have at your disposal to ensure that you are using GOOD research when writing your paper. Follow along as she guides you through how to use GALE and how to Google more effectively! If you were absent today, you can use the worksheet here to try to practice using these tools at home.
HOMEWORK:
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a nice, restful weekend after an exhausting week in the wilderness. I had a great time, but I know I'm definitely feeling wiped out from all of our adventures.
Today's Goal: Reflect on our ability and role as agents of change.
Agenda:
Reading
Y'all. I cannot stress this enough. Reading matters so much. There are countless studies that have shown the insane positive impacts of something as simple as reading for 20 minutes a day. I ask that you do that during RAM. If you can't do it during RAM, I ask that you do that at home. It will make you a better student, guaranteed.
More importantly, I want to know what you're reading and how much you're comprehending of it. Remember the One-Pager you did for your Book Club Novel? You're going to do another one before the end of Quarter 3. (Yep, that means that you need to finish a book between now and March 29th. You can do it.)
To print out a copy of the guidelines and expectations, CLICK HERE.
Group Writing Activity
You'll be sitting in your Book Club groups today and participating in a group writing activity. It's not the easiest thing to complete at home, so if you were absent today, please take some time to reflect and consider the following questions:
Agents of Change Research Project
Remember when we talked about your ability to make an impact on this big crazy world that we live in? Over the next few weeks, you're going to get your chance!
You're going to be working in small groups (2-3 people) to write a research article about a problem or event that is affecting people in the world today, highlighting the different ways that we can make change and help people in need.
In Google Classroom, there is a Google Form. Fill it out to let me know what you might be interested in researching. I'll be assigning your groups and topics, but I want to try to assign you to a topic that interests you so that you'll be more invested and exciting about learning more.
HOMEWORK:
Off to camp we go! Time to enjoy some nature and learn a lot. We're in for a great week. I did not assign No Red Ink this week, because I know you're all enjoying yourselves at camp and I want you to really focus on soaking that in. Remember, you need to have that HyperDoc from last week finished by the time we meet again on Tuesday.
PS. For those who did not attend camp, you will be missed!
You got this, my dears! I am out of the classroom today at a Leadership Conference, but you are in GREAT hands with Mrs. McKibbon. You're working on the same thing we started on Tuesday, so you should all know what you should be doing. Make me proud.
Today's Goal: Read the stories of some remarkable kids in the context of Social Responsibility
Agenda:
Kids Can Change the World HyperDoc
This week, you're going to be working through a HyperDoc in Google Classroom. It's basically an interactive Google Doc. You got this. Read the directions and do what it says. It's pretty simple. Use your time wisely, but also - put in effort. You have time. Show me that you actually used it to create your most quality work.
HOMEWORK:
Welcome back! It's time to change to world! (or, at least time to start thinking about it... YOU CAN DO GREAT THINGS.)
Today's Goal: Read the stories of some remarkable kids in the context of Social Responsibility
Agenda:
Google Profile Picture
It's time to get serious, my friends. You know I love your creative spirit. I love it so much. However, I also really want to live in a world where you have a teensy bit more self-respect for your role as a student. You're going to take ownership of what you're putting out into the universe, especially as an academic.
Gone are the days of Fortnite memes as profile pictures. This is an assignment. It's worth points. By the end of this week, I expect every single one of you to have a Google Profile Picture that is either your beautiful smiling face, or your initials. That's it. No questions.
Signpost Revisions
I did it! I finally graded your Signposts! We've got some work to do, my friends. Spend some time over the next few days reviewing the scores that you received. This is a major part of your grade. If you're not happy with your score, PLEASE - fix them! Resubmit your paragraphs and I will happily re-grade them. I WANT YOU TO SUCCEED, BUT YOU HAVE TO DO THE WORK.

You have today and Thursday to work on it. Anything that is not finished by Thursday will be due over the weekend as homework. Use your time wisely, but also - put in effort. You have time. Book Club One-Pager
Ever heard of a One-Pager? They're pretty awesome. Honestly? Sometimes I get a little bored of grading essays. Instead of writing an essay on this book, I'm giving you an opportunity to show off your creative side instead! You're going to create a One-Pager to summarize and advertise for the book you just read. Read the directions.
If you were absent today, you can work on the One-Pager over break. If you didn't finish in class today, you can work on the One-Pager over break. Either way, it's due Tuesday (February 26th). Have fun with it!
It's Quiz Day! Time to #SHOWWHATYOUKNOW. Seriously though, we've been going over this grammar stuff for a while now. What has stuck with you? I want to know. Don't stress, just do your best.
Today's Goal: Demonstrate a working understanding of fragments, run-ons, commas, and active/passive voice.
Agenda:

Do your best. Take your time. Read the directions. If you were absent today, please come see me Thursday or Friday during RAM to make up the Quiz. (Remember, I'll be in Room 407)
Work Time
I cannot stress this enough. Friday is a BIG day. You have a lot due. For most of you, that's no big deal. If you've been doing your work all quarter, it's basically just another day of class. However, not all of us have been so on top of things. This is your warning. On Friday, I am collecting:
Use this time wisely.

Refugee Articles
It's time to look at some Non-Fiction. I have a present for you! NON FICTION NOTES!

If you have the Grammar Quiz Review done before class on Wednesday, you'll get 1 point extra credit on your quiz!!
HOMEWORK:
Refugees and Migrant Workers. These are words that we hear all the time nowadays. The Refugee Crisis is prime time news coverage, but what does it all really mean? Today's Goal: Discuss the different challenges faced by refugees and migrant workers.

Review HW
It's been a while, and you've had some Grammar HW over the past few weeks. You will be having a Grammar Quiz next week on Wednesday, so it's important that we review your HW to make sure that you've got everything correct in your notes. (That way you can study correctly!) If you were absent in class, or want a refresher, I've included a PDF of the Answer Key for both pages here!
Use the Answer Keys to correct your own work if you need to.
Refugees and Migrants (R36)
We hear these words a lot nowadays. Whether it's on the news, or in movies, or even in our conversations out at lunch, these two words are buzz words that are thrown around a lot. I am not here to engage you in a political discussion. I encourage you to have your own opinions, but it is my job to make sure that you are educated about your beliefs. In order to have an educated opinion, you have to have a true understanding about what you're talking about. That's what we're looking at today.
Follow along as we watch the video and take notes on your worksheet. Add to your notes as we discuss the video as a class.
HOMEWORK
Log into Google Classroom and answer the question regarding Refugees and Migrants. I cannot stress this enough: This is not a forum for a political discussion. Your assignment is to present reasons why any country, not specifically the United States, might be in favor of and opposed to opening their borders to Refugees and Migrants.
*Any student who chooses to attempt to engage in a political debate will have their comments removed and will receive a zero for the assignment.
I miss you guys! I'm sorry I have to be gone another day, but I promise I'll be back on Thursday! In the meantime, you're in good hands with Mr. Omar. Today you'll be learning about Active voice, which can be a little tricky, so pay attention! You can do this!
Today's Goal: Identify the difference between Active and Passive voice.

This is your last class period to work on those R.A.C.E Signpost Questions. The final one (Memory Moment) has been assigned in Google Classroom. Today you have time to work on the Memory Moment R.A.C.E. response and revise your R.A.C.E. paragraphs for each of the ones you have submitted so far. I am begging you. Go back and check your work. Make sure you have done all 6 Signpost Questions in R.A.C.E. format.
If you are still confused on how Signposts work, review Ms. Jolk's website, or ask a friend to help you. You can do this, but you have to put in the work.
If you finish that...
Anything you do not finish in class must be completed for homework.
Today we're talking GRAMMAR! WOOP WOOP! You're excited. I'm excited. It's going to be a great day. (No, but seriously. I love you guys, but if I have to read one more fragment or run-on sentence, I'm going to lose my mind.)

Fragments, Run-Ons, and Commas Notes (R34)
Y'all, I simply can't take it anymore. I try so hard to avoid direct grammar notes, but I'm at a loss at this point. YOU HAVE TO GET THIS. Hence, notes it is!
I tried to make it as painless as possible. Instead of fully taking notes, it's a fill-in-the-blank situation. Follow along in the Google Slides while we review as a class to complete your notes. If you're confused, ask questions. PLEASE.
When you finish the notes, you'll have free time to work on the following:

**If you were absent today, you'll be responsible for Days 1 & 2 when you return, and that grade will count for both!
Signposts Review
By now, you should have completed R.A.C.E. responses for the Aha Moment and Tough Questions. We'll review those as a class today, so be prepared to share out.
Don't remember what I'm talking about? The questions are in Google Classroom, as are all the instructions. Click below for the link to Ms. Jolk's Signpost Website!
Work Time!
You'll have the remainder of class today to get work done. Here are the things you should be working on:
If you finish all of the above, you may start on the No Red Ink assignment for next week.
*Anything you do not finish in class today is due on Tuesday for Homework
Surprise! The original plan for today was for you to start your Book Club Discussions. Turns out, about half of you are gone on the Social Studies Egypt Field Trip, so we're going to push that back to Friday. (Meaning, the homework that was due today? You now have until Friday to finish. You're welcome!)
Today's Goal: Consider how race can affect social tension both in the past and in today's society?
Agenda:
Remember the Titans
This is my favorite movie of all time, and today is the perfect day to share it with you. If you've never seen this film before, it's incredibly relevant to the Unit Question we're considering in this unit.
In Virginia, high school football is a way of life, an institution revered, each game celebrated more lavishly than Christmas, each playoff distinguished more grandly than any national holiday. And with such recognition, comes powerful emotions. In 1971 high school football was everything to the people of Alexandria. But when the local school board was forced to integrate an all black school with an all white school, the very foundation of football's great tradition was put to the test.
While you're watching, consider how each player's own cultural background affects their experience at T.C. Williams High School and in the surrounding town of Alexandria, Virginia.
Oh boy, what a day! Today you're going to be assigned your books and you're even going to get to start reading them! You're getting a lot of information today, so if you're confused about anything, use this website as a reference.
Today's Goal: Have valuable, thoughtful conversations about reading!
Agenda:
Library
Congratulations! Today's the day that you learn which book you'll be reading for the next few weeks. If you were absent today, don't worry - I checked one out for you and will give it to you the next time you come to class!
Costa's Levels of Thinking
When we talk about having small group discussions about our reading, it's important to know the right kind of questions to ask. Costa's Levels of Thinking is a way of looking at questions and grouping them depending on how rigorous they are for your brain muscle. Review the notes here and glue them into your I.N. on page R32.
On page L32, you'll work together with classmates to sort questions by level. Then, copy one example of each level into the correct space in your notebook. *If you were absent, try to create your own sample questions!
Book Club Overview
Review the expectations for the Book Club Roles and glue them in on R33 in your notebook. Then, work together with your group to create a reading schedule and assign roles for each day. Glue your Reading Schedule in on L33. If you finish early, you can start reading!!
*If you were absent, we've recorded your reading schedule and roles for you. You'll have to make up the reading that you missed when you get back!
