Are you living sustainably?

This year, my primary goal has been to hand over the reins to students, allowing them to take the lead in their educational journey. This approach signifies a shift from teacher-centric to student-centric learning, a transformation that necessitates our continuous learning, broader thinking, resourcefulness, and meaningful connections. It's about giving students the power to shape their own learning experiences, and the outcomes, so far, have been remarkable.

S.T.E.A.M. Journal Demonstrations: A Glimpse into Our Learning Journey

Our recent 4th-grade student showcase afternoon at Connect Academy was a testament to this philosophy in action. We began with captivating S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) journal demonstration tables. Here, students handpicked their top five favorite lessons from our S.T.E.A.M. journals and created interactive demonstrations to illustrate these concepts. It was a powerful way for students to convey what they've learned and showcase their vision for the future.

Student-Led Book Clubs: A Journey into the World of Literature

Next, we encouraged families to immerse themselves in literature. Students presented a choice of three books for student-led book clubs. Families engaged in read-aloud sessions, and students skillfully pointed out rich vocabulary and those impactful POWER sentences that have the remarkable ability to captivate the mind and heart.

Coming Together: Celebrating Our Community and Culture

Following these student-led sessions, we gathered as a community, a tradition that we believe is vital to acknowledge the extraordinary talent in the room. We came together with a heartfelt rendition of one of our favorite songs, "We Can Do Hard Things" by Tish Melton. This was not just a musical interlude but a reminder of the strength, unity, and determination that defines our class.

We also had the pleasure of witnessing our students bring our class song to life. It commenced as a vision of who we aspired to be, and today it stands as a testament to who we have become. This reflects our profound belief that culture is the cornerstone of learning and the catalyst for innovation.

The Connection Between Reading and Writing: Firing Up the Authors Within

I seized the opportunity to highlight the connection between the books we had read aloud and immersed ourselves this year, and the art of writing. We emphasized the importance of finding subjects that ignite their passion as it's the spark that leads to exceptional authorship.

A Showcase of Student Writing and Digital Portfolios

Students' writing process was showcased in their subject notebooks, filled with rich vocabulary, language tips, and samples of power writing. We celebrated their most recent chapter books, complete with original artwork on the covers, a biography page featuring their digital portfolio from their Thrively strengths and passions portfolio, and a comprehensive book summary. These books attempted to seamlessly blended narrative, informational, and opinion writing into a single masterpiece!  This is how writing In the world presents, so it is Important to me to teach learners how to blend writing styles.

The Grand Finale: Unveiling Our Digital Presence

In the final act of our showcase, students revealed their meticulously crafted Google websites. These websites have been a year-long labor of love, and now they proudly shared them with their families. The sites feature detailed biography pages, encompassing their strengths, interests, and passions. Every subject they've explored this year was represented on these digital platforms, showcasing their proudest achievements, explaining the significance of each piece of work, and articulating why they take pride in it.

A Feast of Learning and Collaboration

Our afternoon came to a close with an engaging mathematical culninary twist as students took the lead in a learning activity. They quizzed their families on equivalent fractions and the art of adding fractions with crafted homemade pizzas using fresh ingredients from our pizza garden!

A Shift in Focus: Students at the Helm

The most striking aspect of this afternoon, for me, was that I was not the central figure; our students took the spotlight. My role was to document the incredible learning unfolding before my eyes, to diligently prepare the groundwork for what the students had envisioned, and to connect with families who joined us.

This is the path forward in education - less about us, and more about students leading the way. We, as educators, become facilitators of profound and meaningful learning experiences. We are no longer the "sages on the stage." The true magic happens when we empower our students to explore, create, and lead, forging a bright future for us all.

Songwriting Identity

Our class wrote a song that defined who we wanted to be at the beginning of year, and it became who we are.
