Implementing Research through J-PAL LAC
What should you know?
What should you know?
The J-PAL LAC office is here to enable the generation of high-quality evidence to inform public policies in the region. To do so, a great part of our operations are focused on facilitating the implementation of new research projects and their field activities.
To ensure the effective implementation of the research project, our team has established a comprehensive operational infrastructure that supports the initiative from its inception. This infrastructure provides continuous support throughout the entire life cycle of the interventions, adapting to their specific needs at each stage.
During the design and planning phases, streamlined processes are in place to facilitate key operational functions such as budgeting, contracting personnel, procuring goods and services, and managing human resources.
Once the project enters the implementation phase, our team monitors compliance with J-PAL research protocols to uphold ethical standards, research quality, and reproducibility.

What is the Scope of Work (SOW) of J-PAL LAC operations?
The SOW provides a broad overview of the project support activities (including financial, administrative, and technical ones) that the J-PAL LAC office can provide during the implementation of a new research project. In this document you will learn more about:
The budgeting and financial guidelines.
The team structure for hiring research staff (e.g. associates, managers, surveyors).
PIs starting a new project must read and sign the SOW.
What are the Researchers Roles and Responsabilities?
The following document has been prepared to provide clear and precise information on the roles and responsibilities that academics within the J-PAL network and their co-authors should consider when planning to implement and operate new projects through the J-PAL LAC regional office.
The Principal Investigators (PIs) are the leads of their projects. They are responsible for ensuring that their projects have robust experimental designs, are financially viable, and comply with all relevant legal and ethical guidelines and regulations.
The J-PAL LAC team is here to support and enable the projects' financial and administrative operations during their lifecycle.
What are the Minimum Standards for Research Operations?
J-PAL expects all researchers—including affiliated professors, invited researchers, post-docs, PhD students, and their co-PIs—who work with J-PAL to adhere to certain minimum standards of research operations. The following document outlines these expectations.
Are you a PhD student and would like to work with us ?
We are thrilled to work with PhD students and provide support for implementing their research. To develop a strong alliance, it is important to identify and separate our roles and responsibilities. Given the scope of activities that are entitled in an RCT, we expect that PhD students count on the full support and guidance of their supervisors.
Here is a template of a letter from supervisors that we require to start working.
