Cycling in Kilkenny

Kilkenny, a cycling city?

In the 1990s, Kilkenny city had one of the highest mode shares of cycling in Ireland with 13% of the population cycling as their usual meand of transport to work, school or college.

School Travel

Today, approximately 2% of children cycle to school in Kilkenny. Safety is the greatest barrier to cycling cited by parents and children.

Why do we travel?

Commuter journeys make up less than one third of all journeys. Some other trip purposes include companion trips (e.g. escorting children and others for education, care or leisure journeys), shopping, visiting, accessing services and recreation.

Creating a safe, cycling network will enable many more people to travel independently and help reduce our reliance on a car. In turn, this will reduce transport poverty and ensure greater access to services for all. Reduced car travel will reduce our carbon emission, reduce air and noise pollution and make Kilkenny a much more liveable city.
