We want to all have a say in matters of pupil voice and all help to contribute to improving the school.
We have made changes and are trialling a new way of organising Choosing Champions so children access each group during a focused week.
We have also started a new 'whole school' pupil council using Friday assembly and subsequent discussion time.
We want to ensure children have a clear sense of the local area, including music, culture, walks and recipes. This could make a booklet for visitors.
The school should also focus on the 50th anniversary of the current building as well as moving towards the new building.
We are incorporating all these ideas into our school improvement plan , especially for writing
House teams worked really well but they wanted limited swapping between teams, siblings in the same team and the same house team names so they feel a sense of belonging with the flags etc they made.
The pupils are all in the same house team as previously and new siblings have been paired. We are looking into new house team activities after suggestion for Basketball.
We want the Gaelic Medium pupils to have access to more Gaelic speaking visitors.
Eilidh Scammell from Ainmean Aite na h'Alba came in to work on a fantasic place names project which the children loved. We have also made valuable links through this with Shona Paterson in Portree.
In the 'Sports' Choosing Champions group the pupils did a survey and collated information. 'We found that the younger pupils havent got as much access to clubs and activities. Could we provide a multi-sports club for P1-3?
We spoke to Sarah Ross and a couple of parents and are planning a Multi-sports club for younger pupils.
We want the pupils to have more opportunities for creative activities and performing arts activities.
We put 'Performing arts' on our School Improvment Plan for 2023-24. The focus of Term 2 assessment tasks and activities was being an audience and a performer. We visited Eden Court for the pantomime and put on our own show of Peter Pan.
' We want to do something about plastic waste'
We set up an Eco-Committee with pupil representatives, members of staff and some local members of the community interested in environmental issues.
We made a change to disposable plastics at lunchtime, started a crisp packet recycling scheme and children made posters about saving energy in school.
'It is important for children to have skills for later life'
We spent time looking at our Curriculum Rationale and are developing a focus on 'Skills'. We have also ensured there are opportunities for Enterprise each year, chance for pupils to develop learning independently - characterised brilliantly in our Youth Speaks successes and have put in more STEM opportunities and included Coding / Programming into the curriculum.
' We want to stay safe but also reconnect with our friends.'
We have made planning for a cautious but positive return from Covid lockdown a priority. We have gradually reintroduced things such as House Teams - meeting and voting outdoors, and coming together for a Charity walk. We are gradually getting more children playing together at break and lunchtime.
'We like hearing what the children are learning about'
We introduced SeeSaw and have developed using it more to share latest and best work. We have also begun sharing Learning Conversations on SeeSaw.
We continue to share a weekly newsletter update every Friday and have organised online Parents Evenings. We hope to restart Open Afternoons and Parent Cafe as soon as we can, pending restrictions.
After completing a SHANNARI Self assessment wheel we analysed that a particular group of children said they were not 'Safe'. We spoke to them and they said 'At lunchtime sometimes there is not an adult outside for us to go to.'
We found that there was a 10 minute gap in staffing which we could immediately rectify so the children had an adult on hand during breaktimes for the younger children.
'We think the children should have access to specialist PE teachers to improve Health and Wellbeing.'
We initially secured the services of Mr Mackenzie, a specialist PE teacher to cover CCR. He helped with staff training and now Mrs Mackinnon specialises in teaching PE across the school.
We have also fostered strong links with Corry Capers - Outdoor Learning Centre in Broadford to get the children learning and exploring outdoors.
