Makaton is a language programme that combines signs, symbols and speech to allow children (and adults) to communicate. Communication is an essential part of our daily lives and therefore it is crucial that all children are given the skills to enable them to communicate. It is not just important for children to be able to access the school curriculum, or to even express their own needs or wants but also for them to make and develop friendships. Makaton uses signs and spoken words in word order and can act as a prompt and support for all children, not just those with communication delay or difficulty.
At Broadford Primary School, all pupils and staff are developing their knowledge of Makaton. Each week we have a few new signs to learn and try to use in our daily lives. These signs are displayed in school and shared with families. We believe that it is important for Makaton to be used widely to enhance all children’s development and help us all be more accepting and inclusive of everyone as unique individuals.
