Kindergarten and 1st Grade Activities

2020-2021 Songs

Short Song: Frog in the Meadow

Kindergarten classes learned a song called Frog in the Meadow. It is a short song to practice steady beat and using our singing voice! Since we are not singing very often at school right now, use the video to try singing at home.

Short Song: I Met a little Frog

1st grade students learned a song called I Met a little Frog. This short song helps us practice playing a rhythm on an instrument- independently of what our voices are singing. We played the 'hop' rhythms with plastic frogs, wooden frog guiros, and hand drums!

Short Songs

Pitter Patter

Have you ever tried creating music in a different place? In your backyard or at the beach? At a campground or in the car?

I created this song video in a very different place! Enjoy this rainy day song!

Going on a Picnic

The weather is going to be nice this week. It's a great time to plan a picnic with your family. Thank you Portland Public Schools Food Services for some of our healthy picnic foods!

Voice Warm ups

Warm-ups with slide whistle

Before you start signing, it's important to warm up your voice. ... Warming up your voice stretches your vocal chords! It helps with breathing too, just like when you stretch your muscles before running or playing sports!

Warm-ups with lines

Do you remember what to do with your voice? How does the line tell you what to do?

Make some of your own voice warm ups!

Echo Songs

Echo Song: Wise Old Owl

A sweet echo song for the owl lovers in the world. Sing along and if you don't get all the words right, it's OWL RIGHT! Just have fun and be as musical as you can!

The Littlest Worm

We love songs about all kinds of animals; big ones, little ones, flying ones, crawling ones and swimming ones but this is one of our favorite animal songs. Just like Bill Grogan's goat, it's not the happiest of endings for this creature.

Wide Eyed Owl

We're going on a field trip for music class today. We're off to find an old friend from the music room! Kindergarteners will remember this music room helper!

Bill Grogan's Goat

Enjoy the silly yet unfortunate song tale of Bill Grogan and his goat. We feature a very fun and silly instrument in this song called a kazoo. If you have a kazoo grab it and play along with us at the end of the song!

Oh My, No More Pie!

Remember this song? Can you be the leader and have someone else echo you at home?

John the Rabbit

Here's an easy echo song. Sing it while you clean out your garden beds or plant some seeds today. Do you know who the mystery singer is?

Rickabamboo

Learn a new song with me for today's musical activity. "Rickabamboo" is a fun campfire song that is an echo song. If you remember it from last year's music class YOU can be the teacher and lead it for someone at your house. Have fun making music with your family.

Sing and Move!

Here are some of our favorite songs we sing and move to in Kindergarten and 1st grade music class. Enjoy the music!

1. This is My Trunk: sing and add the tree movements

2. Bears and Chairs: sing and add all the movements

3. Everyone Asked about you: do you remember how the book ends?

4. Highway No. 1: Get ready to drive, hop, skip and wiggle!

5. Owl Song: sing and practice the owl movements

6. Fanga Alafia: sing in two different languages!

7. Seven Jumps: do you remember all the 7 movements? Practice your balancing at the end!

8. Silly Dance: Cut loose and get silly!

Instruments of the Orchestra

Instruments of the Orchestra

Students at OAES have been exploring the sounds of the instruments of the Orchestra. We've been working our way through the woodwinds, Brass, Percussion and Strings families. Do you remember which colors we used to fill in our coloring sheet? Here is another page for you to complete at home; ask your parents to put on some classical music while you color!
