Esports are organized, competitive multiplayer video games that requires communication, critical thinking, and sportsmanship. While video games have been around for many years, competitive gaming has been popularized since 2010. Many esport events take place as tournaments that are streamed online where players are competing for a variety of prizes.
Many teenagers are all about gaming whether it is from their phone, on a console, or online with thousands of other people. By offering esports as an extracurricular activity, more students have an opportunity to participate after school; no more solitude in their bedrooms. These students are no longer isolated from school camaraderie. They have an opportunity to meet new friends, become more engaged in the classroom, strengthen their success for graduation, and develop interest in higher education.
Absolutely! Providing esports in high school not only boosts student engagement but also provides an opportunity for students to earn scholarships for higher education. There are over 200 colleges that offer scholarships to esports competitors; esports is becoming the new football scholarship for students. Scholarships range anywhere from 2-25 thousand dollars. The closest college to our area is Fresno State, who are recruiting for new members to join their team to play League of Legends and Overwatch.
Fresno State has an esports program that is recruiting players in Rocket League, Overwatch and League of Legends. Those are one of the five games that our students could choose to compete in. If they practiced and competed in these games throughout high school, they could potentially earn a scholarship to a university that is relatively close to home.
