FAQ's

What is Title I?

  • Title I is a federally funded program designed to improve educational opportunities. These programs serve students who meet the criteria for supplemental instruction in core academics, with a primary focus on literacy and reading skills. The goal of Title I is to help students be successful in their classrooms working on grade level material. Title I interventions often provide instruction to help students fill in any gaps in their reading or math skills.

What does this look like at my child's school?

  • At Woodland Elementary, students who receive pull-out services work in reading and/or math interventions 4 times per week for 25-30 minutes (math) and/or 30 minutes (reading) per day. These groups are typically small, usually 2-5 students per Intervention team member and normally occur in a different setting than the students classroom. It is important to understand that during this time, your student is NOT missing CORE instruction in their classroom. At this time, all students are working to extend or continue practicing previously taught content.

Why does my child qualify for Title I or other intervention services?

  • Title I and other intervention services are offered to students based on collection of data that comes from:

    • Acadience screeners

    • Report card grades

    • Fastbridge Math Scores

    • Teacher recommendations

Is Title I like Special Education?

  • No. Title I is a federally funded program that is designed to support all students who are in need of academic support. Receiving Title I services does not mean your student is receiving special education services.

Do all schools provide Title I services?

  • No. Only 4 Portage Elementary schools offer Title I services.

    • Woodland Elementary

    • Haverhill Elementary

    • Central Elementary

    • Amberly Elementary

*However, it is important to know that all eight Portage Elementary buildings use the MTSS model to provide intervention and instruction to all students regardless of any additional Title I funding.

What does my child do during their intervention time?

  • There are a variety of programs that we use for Title I. Title I requires that all of our programs are research based and are taught with fidelity. We have reading and math programs that we use at all grade levels. Other intervention providers use some similar programs or other materials to meet the needs of their students.
