The below videos will talk through the key documents you will be using as a Subject Mentor. The trainees portfolio of practice is far broader than these and so the other pages on this site will give contextual information about the course. This is exceptionally useful for your wider understating of the evidence trainees require to complete the programme.
As Subject Mentor, you are required to complete the appropriate paperwork and support the trainee in their training, and helping to develop their Subject Specific Pedagogy.

Teaching Log (TL)

A signature is required to confirm that the hours that have been recorded on the Teaching Log are a true and accurate reflection of what has been delivered. This will be provided in the Subject Mentor Review (see the video below for guidance on this).

As a mentor, ensure the trainee uses the subject knowledge audit to break down their teaching topics and hyperlink the relevant specifications.

Help them use the audit to set PDR targets for improving knowledge, addressing misconceptions, or strengthening pedagogical content knowledge.

Regularly monitor their progress, ensuring they update confidence levels and link evidence of their development in the PDR.

As per the guidance from the ETF, trainees MUST provide evidence of 10 observations. An Observation of Teaching and Learning Form (OTL) must be completed by ALL of the observers, including in joint observations.

Observations should be a minimum of 45 minutes in length and feedback should be given to the trainee within a reasonable timescale. Paperwork must also be completed for all formal observations for the trainees portfolio.

It is expected that the subject mentor will have regular meetings with their mentee and the basis of this conversation will be around the Mentor Record. For full time trainees this is a 1 hour meeting weekly and for part time 30 Minutes Weekly or 1 hour Fortnightly as per the dates in the Mentor Record.

Know what your trainee is studying
Facilitate professional formative dialogue
Link theory to practice
Review a range of teaching practice and experience
Facilitate peer observation opportunities
The Mentor Record will be completed by the trainee with targets set from the mentor discussion and reflect on their achievement. The mentor should read these reflections regularly to ensure that they are completing them.

This form is to be completed by the Subject Mentor at the end of each phase for the trainee to submit for assessment. The university tutor will send these out with set deadlines for completion.
