Introduction
This page contains information about the Further Education Teacher Training Programme based on campus at the University of Portsmouth. These trainees are pre-service which means they may not have any prior teaching experience. They have been recruited and selected by the University of Portsmouth as they have shown the skills and attributes required for teaching in their academic and personal background. This can mean that these trainees are nervous and need a lot of support in the initial stages of the course.

Contents of the Page
This page is broken down into the months of the course. Each section provides details of expectations for the given point in time. This is designed to support trainee teachers and their mentors by ensuring expectations are clear. It is suggested that at the beginning of each month the focus of the trainee-mentor meeting should be to review the forthcoming months expectations. This will also ensure that target setting is appropriate to the point in the course.
You will be allocated a trainee to support for the year. You will be sent their trainee profile and video to get an idea of their areas of interest within their subject, and a little about their personality. The Professional Mentor and The Subject Mentor should plan an observation timetable for the three days the trainee is on placement ensuring housekeeping elements are covered such as log ins, name badges, access to a workstation, subject specifications etc. Mentors should attend mentor training to ensure they are prepared for their trainee. Trainees will share their portfolio which contains key documents including their induction checklist and PDR, vital first week documents.
Trainees have been set targets to achieve in their PDR and have other documents and tasks to complete in week one. They have requested a meeting with their subject mentor on Wednesday to allow you to see their reflections on their targets and for you to help them set new targets in the following areas for the next week. See more guidance on the PDR and other portfolio documents in this guide.
A target that could be set is around preparing for some teaching in week 2.
Trainees should maintain being in the classroom for 12 hours a week, and this week as they should be teaching one hour, they should be observing for 11 hours. Ensure that they are getting out of the department and seeing other practice as much as possible at this stage.
Trainees are preparing for their first academic submission of their rationale and lesson plan on 7th October for their microteach which will be held on Friday 11th October.
