The Team
FoodCiTi Cluster leader
I am one of the few accounting researchers to investigate the agri-food industry. I write about the effects of accounting and performance measurement practices on the industry, and on society more widely. In particular, I investigate fraud in the food and drink industry. I have also led a successful project, on the growing costs and other problems associated with retail returns in from online purchases. This work has brought me into contact with major retailers in Europe and is continuing with new projects around costing, lean management and circular economy in omnichannel environments.
My research interests fall into a number of related areas including women’s writing, women’s cultures, feminism, and media representations of women. I have a particular research and publication interest in women’s magazines and their cultural contexts. Magazines, lifestyle television, television drama, novels, short stories and science fiction are all media forms and genres which interest me and have informed my writing. Recent publications include work on feminism and women’s magazines; modernism, war and May Sinclair; and 1970s British television. I have completed a monograph on women’s magazines, called Magazine Movements, which examines the political and social impact some magazines have had on British women’s history. I am currently preparing a second monograph on women's cultures and the media.
My research interests are centred on how our sensory system (mainly smell and taste) affect our behaviour on a unisensory and multisensory level. One example of this is how our perception of alcohol is affected not merely by taste but also by auditory factors, which is important to understand as this influences the rate at which alcohol is consumed and thus intoxication. More recently, I have conducted research that seeks to further understand the relationship between the chemical senses and the emotion of disgust.
I'm currently working as a Research Project Manager at the University of Portsmouth. My current projects include CRUNCH (http://fwe-nexus.eu/), a 19 partner collaboration investigating climate resilient interventions in urban areas, and a GCRF project developing hurricane resilient architecture for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
I am passionate about environmental sustainability, and am taking this further through my PhD research into environmentally sustainable behaviour in independent urban breweries in the UK.
