School Uniform & Equipment
Embroidered school jumpers & polo shirts are available from Regis in Newbridge, Rugger Bugz in Ystrad Mynach and AJM Schoolwear in Cwmfelinfach.
Red sweatshirts (no hoodies)
Red polo shirt
Black trousers / joggers / leggings / shorts
Black shoes or trainers - no laces please until children can tie them themselves (trainers to be in school throughout the week if shoes are worn)
We ask that long hair should be tied back.
Skirts and tights and summer dresses are not listed as school uniform. If parents choose to send their child to school wearing them, no objections will be raised, however, skirts and tights should be black in keeping with the listed school uniform of black trousers, joggers, leggings or shorts. Summer dresses should be red.
Coats
Children should wear coats when the weather is cooler or when there is a risk of rain: children may play outside in light rain or need to move around school site as part of learning activities.
Children are not allowed to wear jewellery with the exception of small stud earrings, or watches (not Smart Watches). Please do not allow your child to wear jewellery, as it can be dangerous. If a child does come to school wearing jewellery, they will be asked to remove it.
We request that all parents support our school uniform policy.
PE & Outdoor Learning
In line with Curriculum for Wales, which was brought in September 2022, we plan for outdoors and experiential learning, particularly for our youngest pupils who have access to trikes and mud kitchens, for example. We have invested in adventure logs for the playgrounds and promote daily activity - we launched The Daily Mile for Welsh Government.
Curriculum for Wales promotes flexible organisation of teaching and learning and so a flexible timetable for PE is desirable. Our current school uniform (with no separate PE kit) was chosen, with this curriculum in mind, in 2022.
Parents choosing to dress their children in skirts and / or smart shoes should be mindful that we operate a flexible timetable and encourage outdoor activity at play and throughout the day and this forms the rationale for not listing skirts or smart shoes as uniform. If parents choose to send their child to school wearing formal shoes, they should ensure that trainers (labelled with the child’s name) are left in school throughout the term.
Children changing shoes will need to be able to do this independently and staff will not be responsible for ensuring this is done outside of PE lessons. Please note, children should not wear trainers with laces until they are capable of doing them up.
For safety reasons, watches and earrings are not allowed during PE and games lessons and must be removed before the lesson (we do not accept ‘taped’ ears). We understand that some children may have newly pierced ears:
The school and the Authority do not advise the wearing of jewellery, and cannot accept responsibility for its loss or damage, nor for any injury which the jewellery may cause. We advise that any children wishing for their ears to be pierced do so in the six week Summer Holiday.
Pupils taking swimming lessons should wear suitable clothing (no bikinis or swim shorts) and may need to wear swimming hats and verrucae socks etc if necessary.
They will also sometimes need to wear appropriate footwear for outdoor learning e.g. wellies. In addition, for some activities, we may ask for children to dress appropriately for outdoor learning activities e.g. this might be old clothes if there is a risk of getting muddy or warmer clothing / gloves and hat / additional layers if it is particularly cold.
Bags / Lunch Boxes / Water Bottles / Mobile Phones / Other Items
We have limited storage for bags and only permit children to bring bags to school in exceptional circumstances. Permission is given, for example, for those children requiring a change of clothes (in case of accident or if needed for an activity after school). Please approach the school office for agreement.
We have storage for lunch boxes outside each classroom. Children are permitted sports top water bottles to use throughout the day (please do not provide expensive bottles).
Children are not permitted to bring pencil cases, toys or other items to school. This includes mobile phones. Exceptions can be made for mobile phones in exceptional circumstances if agreed in advance and permission is agreed – please contact the school office for the policy and permission form.
Slim book bags are permitted for transporting reading books.
