There are many published and internally created aids to revision available in all modern languages, all aimed at enabling pupils to practise, review and develop their knowledge of vocabulary, structure and grammar. Here is a selection:

All Languages GCSE – Support for Parents/Students


Speaking exam information - (This exam will take place in the main Summer examination period)

Students will do 3 tasks in the exam, a role play, a photo card and a general conversation with their class teacher

For foundation students the general conversation is between 3-5 minutes and for higher students the general conversation is between 5-7 minutes

Students should know off by heart the high frequency structures in different tenses, time phrases, opinions and connectives and answers should not be pre learnt


Writing Exam Information (This exam will take place in the main Summer examination period)

Students will have to do several tasks without a dictionary or notes

Foundation includes: writing sentences based on a photo, translation into the target language, a written task of 40 words and one of 90 words in French/German/ Spanish

Higher includes; 2 written tasks - one of 90 words and one of 150 words in French/German/ Spanish, translation into the target language

Students should know off by heart the high frequency structures in different tenses, time phrases, opinions and connectives.


Listening/Reading exam Information: (These exams are in the main Summer examination period).

Reading Foundation 45 mins, Reading Higher 1 hour. This will include questions and answers in both French/German/Spanish and English as well as translation into English

Listening Foundation 40 mins, Listening Higher 50 mins. This will include questions and answers in both French/German/Spanish and English

Vocabulary revision is of utmost importance for these exams


Parents can support the learning by:

Testing their child on the vocabulary lists and encouraging them to listen to and read French/German/Spanish via revision websites for focussed learning. Encouraging their child to attend the pre-exam practice in school.

Encouraging their child to attend support sessions in MFL closer to the exam period.
