Course Assessment Portfolio of work (controlled test - coursework) – 60%

Externally set controlled test (exam) – 40%


Portfolio of work

  • Throughout year 10 and year 11 students will have completed a portfolio of work demonstrating their ability to respond to different project briefs and explore a variety of material and techniques.

  • Opportunity will be provided for ‘one to one’ portfolio improvement sessions at lunchtimes and after school.

  • Students will also have a copy of the current assessment and grade boundaries

  • Objectives and clear guidance will be given to ensure individual success.


Controlled test (exam)

  • The controlled test will take the form of a 10 hour exam in which the students produce a personal outcome in response to a chosen theme, set by the exam board.

  • The students will be given approx 8 weeks starting in January 2019, to prepare for the exam, in which time they will produce a sketch book of research and development work.

  • A checklist and support materials will be given to all students and sent home to parents.


Top tips for parents

  • Encourage visits to art galleries and exhibitions.

  • Encourage use of sketchbook work at home – drawing, painting, photography, etc. (minimum of one hour per week)

  • Encourage students to discuss their artwork and share their ideas.

Hospitality & Catering

Course Assessment Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) - 60%

Externally set controlled test (exam) - 40%

How the course is assessed


Written exam: 1.5 hours, 90 marks (40% of GCSE)

Non-Examined Assessment: 9 hours written portfolio which includes a 3 hour practical exam


  • Revision sessions will be available after school for those students who need to re-sit the exam following the results gained in Year 10

  • The NEA task is underway in lessons and will be completed by Easter. The programme will include the practical exam in March 2023. Letters will be sent out nearer the time, of requirements eg. ingredients, dishes etc.

  • Students can work through their file making notes – bullet points, charts, spider diagrams to aid their writing up of each assessment objective in the ‘live NEA’ sessions


Revision

Design & Technology

Non-Examined Assessment (NEA) – 50%

Externally set controlled test (exam) – 50%


2/5 lessons at GCSE will have a theoretical focus. Students will also have regular exposure to small exam style questions as starter tasks. Once coursework (NEA) is complete in March of the examination year, students will concentrate on exam preparation in lessons.

Paper 1 Structure:

  • Core technical principles - 3 Units

  • Specialist technical principles - 1 Unit

  • Designing and making principles – 2 Units


How it's assessed

Written exam: 2 hours, 100 marks (50% of GCSE)

  • Section A – Core technical principles (20 marks): a mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions assessing a breadth of technical knowledge and understanding.

  • Section B – Specialist technical principles (30 marks): several short answer questions (2–5 marks) and one extended response to assess a more in depth knowledge of technical principles.

  • Section C – Designing and making principles (50 marks): a mixture of short answer and extended response questions.
