3rd GCC International Research Conference on GCED

The 3rd GCC International Research Conference on GCED is a high-level academic convening scheduled on July 29-31, 2026 at Palawan State University, anchored on the theme: “Academe as a Global Actor for Peace and Global Citizenship Education: Transformative Pathways for International Understanding through ESD and GCED.” The conference responds to the urgent need to strengthen the role of higher education institutions as socially responsible, transformative, and sustainability-driven actors. Grounded in Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the conference aims to bring together scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to critically examine institutional transformation, decolonization, climate education, peacebuilding, and social justice in education.

The conference will serve as a platform for research dissemination, policy dialogue, and academic collaboration that advances global responsibility within Philippine and ASEAN higher education systems.

GCC IRCON GCED Through the Years

1st GCC International Research Conference on GCED

The 1st GCC International Research Conference on Global Citizenship Education (IRCon GCED), held on October 4–6, 2023 in Boracay, Philippines, gathered local and international researchers, educators, and advocates to advance Global Citizenship Education (GCED) in the ASEAN region. Anchored on the theme “Traversing Global Citizenship Education in the New Normal: From Research Innovations to Impactful Actions,” the three-day conference served as a platform for presenting research, sharing best practices, and fostering collaboration. It highlighted emerging trends, innovative pedagogies, and strategies for integrating GCED across educational levels, while promoting knowledge exchange and capacity building. Ultimately, the conference contributed to strengthening GCED initiatives in the Philippines and supported the development of a national roadmap toward a more inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable global society.

2nd GCC International Research Conference on GCED

The 2nd GCC International Research Conference on Global Citizenship Education (IRCon GCED) was held on August 6–8, 2024 at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang, Malaysia. Organized by the USM School of Educational Studies in collaboration with GCC-USM and the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), the conference gathered researchers, academics, and practitioners from across Asia and beyond.

Anchored on the theme “Building Inclusive Communities Through Global Citizenship Education,” the conference provided a dynamic platform for presenting research, fostering international collaboration, and strengthening networks among GCED advocates. With around 90 presenters from countries such as Malaysia, Japan, Ghana, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, the event showcased diverse perspectives and innovative approaches in advancing GCED.

The conference emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between policy and practice, enhancing teachers’ capacity, and promoting inclusive, sustainable societies through education. It also highlighted the transformative role of GCED in addressing global challenges and cultivating responsible, engaged global citizens.
