Mechanics 3: Jump Ball, Throw In, Timeouts

Mechanics (55 minutes):

Review Session 2

  • Primary Coverage Areas

  • On-ball and off-ball

Jump ball

  • Referee's duties

    1. Check table, partner, captains

    2. Blow whistle (drop whistle before tossing ball)

    3. Step between players and toss ball

      • Straight up

      • Higher than players can jump

      • Practice using basketball ring

    4. Usually becomes Trail

    5. Ensure arrow properly set

  • Umpire's duties

    1. Check table/partner

    2. Stand in front of table at mid-court

    3. Raise arm to chop clock

    4. Observe all non-jumpers for violations

    5. Ensure toss is proper (call back bad toss)

    6. Chop clock when ball is legally touched

    7. Usually becomes Lead

  • Discuss violations

  • Jump ball ends when ball touches

    1. Non-jumper

    2. Floor

    3. Backboard

    4. Referee

Throw-ins

  • General Provisions

    1. Take ball out of bounds in appropriate spot

    2. Make eye contact with partner

    3. Box in players

    4. Bounce ball to thrower-in when on sideline or backcourt endline

    5. Hand ball to thrower-in on frontcourt baseline

    6. Backcourt throw-ins administered by Trail

    7. Frontcourt throw-ins administered by official responsible for line.

Timeouts

  • Rules & Things to Know

    1. When teams might want a timeout

      • After a run by the opponent

      • When caught in a trap

      • End of game situations

    2. Who can call a timeout

      • Head coach

      • Player on the floor

    3. When can a team call a timeout

      • During a dead ball either team may call a timeout

      • During a throw-in only team in possession may call a timeout

    4. Length & Number Allowed

      • Three (3) sixty (60) second timeouts

      • Two (2) thirty (30) second timeouts

  • Reporting Timeouts

    1. Calling official reports timeout - do not pass it on to your partner

    2. Ask head coach ONE TIME what type of timeout they are requesting; if no reply, it will be a sixty second time out

    3. Report timeout to table AFTER PLAYERS HAVE REACHED THEIR BENCHES

      • Color

      • Who called timeout - Number of player or "coach"

      • Type of timeout (30 or 60) - give proper signal

      • Start the timer

  • Position during timeouts

    1. Official who will administer throw-in after timeout goes to spot will be inbounded

      • If spot is in front of bench, come on to court to lane line extended

    2. Other official

      • If 60-second timeout - stand on midcourt line & behind center circle in relation to table

      • If 30-second timeout - stand on midcourt line & in front of center circle in relation to table

      • 3. If officials need to talk, leave ball on floor where it will be inbounded
