INSTRUCTOR - HAVE APPRENTICES COME ONTO COURT AND USE THEM TO DIAGRAM PCS's
LEAD has area from far lane line up to free throw line, free throw line extended to near sideline and down to endline
TRAIL has everything else
PCA's change as officials change position on court
Always look for MOST COMPETITIVE MATCH-UPS
Discuss secondary coverage areas and expanding PCA's when necessary
Minimize rotations
Move to get angles
Lines of responsibility
LEAD has endline and near sideline
TRAIL has near sideline, mid-court/division line, everything in backcourt
On-ball & off-ball coverage
OFFICIATE THE DEFENSE
KNOW YOUR PRIMARY COVERAGE AREA (PCA)
On-ball
Ball is always the competitive matchup if in your PCA
Have appropriate closely guarded count - five (5) seconds each for holding ball, dribbling ball, holding ball
Maintain peripheral eye contact with partner when ball is in grey area or moving in/out of PCA
Be fluid in your movement and move with a purpose
Off-ball
Realize your PCA may extend into secondary areas and beyond
Look for chucks, illegal screens, non-basketball plays
Always be aware of ball's location
