The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter (SFBAC or the Chapter) thanks everyone who attended and volunteered at this year’s Member Appreciation Day and Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Exploratorium located at Pier 15 in San Francisco on August 24, 2019. The event marked the 45th anniversary for the Chapter and was a great success! This important event helped meet several goals: provide a fun and free networking event for our members, obtain feedback from members on future goals, and fulfill the Annual General Meeting requirement. This year, a total of 229 members registered for AGM.
For the fun part of the event, SFBAC raffled off six prizes, which ranged from $50 Visa gift cards to iPad Mini’s. In addition to the six raffle prize-winners, all attendees received free lunches, free entrance tickets to the Exploratorium, and 2.0 professional development units (PDUs). We were also very fortunate to have a keynote speaker, Mr. Thomas Walenta from the Board of Directors of PMI.org, who spoke about “The Value of Project Management” – PMI’s 2019 Pulse of the Professional ®.
To fulfill the business goals of the event, our 126 attendees were part of the Annual General Meeting, where the Board President (Anup Deshpande), Chief Financial Officer (Zenaida Alejandrino) and Chief Executive Officer (Vijay Ratthinam) provided updates on the health and accomplishments of the Chapter. In addition, attendees participated in real-time surveys that provided information on what is important to members, and, in turn, the information will be used to establish ENDS (or Objectives) for the Chapter. A sample survey question is whether members agree or disagree with this statement: “I would like the Chapter to help me develop my project management competences” (55% of respondents strongly agree). During the Policy Governance ® 101 portion of the program, Chief Governance Officer, Tyrone Navarro, explained that the survey results will be used to establish ENDS, which will become objectives for the Chapter for the next 3-5 years! In the coming months, the CEO and Chapter volunteers will evaluate the surveys and develop implementation plans to help achieve the ENDS set by members.
As a new board member, I am thoroughly impressed with the dedication of our Chapter volunteers, with this and many other events. For this particular event and thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, over 65 people attended an event that lasted over 4-hours, and over 75% of attendees participated in the live surveys which provided feedback to the Chapter!

Public speaking and being a good project manager go hand-in-hand. Whether you're leading a team meeting or giving a presentation to your client you'll have to speak in front of people. If the thought of public speaking gives you anxiety, ScopeMasters is definitely the place for you. Public speaking like project management is a skill that can be learned and mastered in the right environment and with proper practice. Ask yourself the following questions to see how a ScopeMasters meeting can help you sharpen your skills.
- Are you a bit apprehensive about speaking out in meetings?
- Do you always hear what people trying to say?
- Is providing constructive and effective feedback something you feel comfortable providing?
- Are you the leader you want to be?
ScopeMasters, a Toastmasters Club for PMI-SFBAC Members, will show you how to become a confident, effective speaker, a listener, an evaluator, and run interesting and effective meetings through an enjoyable, thoroughly professional program. Adults learn best by doing, and that’s how Toastmasters works. It provides a safe environment for you to hone your communication skills.
Your journey starts with the basic Toastmasters Communication and Leadership Programs, a series of speech projects designed to help you learn and practice public speaking as well as leadership skills. Each project builds on the preceding assignments.
The PMI-SFBAC ScopeMasters Club recognizes the value of a non-threatening atmosphere of fostering self-development efforts. Meeting consists of three main activities:
Table Topics: Table Topics provide opportunities to practice impromptu speaking skills critically important in business and at home.
Speeches: At each meeting, selected members give prepared speeches.
Evaluations: Each speaker receives immediate feedback in the form of evaluation by a fellow club member. Evaluations are constructive and helpful, and are based on specific guidelines provided in the manual for each speech.
Leadership Opportunities: If you are interested in gaining leadership experience, you may choose to serve as a Club officer. Each Club has a President, Vice Presidents of Education, Membership, and Public Relations, as well as Secretary, Treasurer, and Sergeant-at-Arms.
How Do I Join? Attend a club meeting or two as a visitor. Then, whenever you are ready, fill out the application enclosed in the guest packet you receive at the club meeting. Membership fees are modest and include dues and a small materials fee.
How to Get Involved: If you are interested in finding out more about ScopeMasters, or want to become a member, please send an email to scopemasters@pmisfbac.org and include your contact information.
