Some Glorious reads for a new term...

The Haunting of Aveline Jones

Phil Hickes

I was really excited about this book. I often have students at school asking for 'horror' or 'ghost stories' and I find the majority of horror books lean quite heavily towards the 'Young Adult' age range...understandably, as is the nature of the horror genre. However, I am always on the look out for scary books for our younger students (ones that they can enjoy but won't give them nightmares, or too much 'grown up' content - that can be 'scary' on a whole different level!).

Aveline, a lover of ghost stories, comes across a strange book, whilst holidaying at her aunt's house by the sea. From this finding, her half-term is transformed as she sets about on an intriguing mystery...to find the author of this book; a young girl called Primrose Penberthy who vanished from the coastal village years before...and never returned.

The author has created a brilliant 'old-fashioned' yet totally contemporary ghost story. A story that is fantastically creepy without being horrendously gory or incredibly depressing. In fact, he has balanced this story to fit so perfectly into my missing niche (ghost stories for pre-teens) it is as if Phil Hickes has read my mind!

Aveline is a wonderful character and her delightful adventures are (thankfully) just beginning. The next book 'The Bewitching of Aveline Jones' is out in September 2021!

Boy, Everywhere

By A M Dassu

Sami has a very comfortable and happy life in Syria; his dad is a doctor, his mum a teacher, he and his best friend Joseph are excited to be part of the school's football trials...

But he never gets to play. His family flees Syria because of the war and begin to make their long, perilous journey to find safety in Britain.

This book is written in a very accessible way and enables students, from Year 6 onwards, to begin to understand some of the reasons that refugees come to the UK, how hard it is for them to leave their families and homes behind and the difficult and dangerous journey they must make to get here.

An excellent book to make us more aware of what people go through and the risks and sacrifices they must make to feel safe and secure again.

Some lovely moments of kindness but lots of tense, scary times too, and ultimately a very important book for all young people to read today.

THE OUTLAWS SCARLETT & BROWNE

Jonathan Shroud

Set in dystopian Britain after an environmental disaster, our heroine, the smart talking, sharp shooter, Scarlett accidentally encounters a hapless young man, Albert Browne.

Travelling across the wastelands of England, they encounter trouble every way they turn, trying to outrun the law and the other unsavoury characters on their tail.

A lively and bright, thoroughly entertaining adventure with witty dialogue and some brilliant vocabulary.

Although this is a fine story in itself, I presume that it is the start of a new series? There are lots of questions that need answering, mainly to do with Scarlett's back story. The good news is that it didn't ruin the story in any way and I definitely want to find out about her, so will be looking forward to the next instalment.

Recommended for good Year 7 readers and upwards :)

The Swallows' Flight

Hilary McKay

Set during World War II, this beautifully written book follows families both in Germany and England throughout the traumatic war years.

So gentle and sensitively written, the characters are so real and vibrantly constructed, you become totally invested in their lives. There are lots of storylines within the book but the author weaves them together perfectly with wisdom and compassion, touching on important historical points of war.

Ruby and Kate are both unconfident and insecure but grow into wonderful capable young ladies by the end of the story, when their worlds collide with the German boys, Erik and Hans, in a most unexpected dramatic fashion. There is also Pax, the dog, who is a wonderful character in his own right!

There are so many books about this period of history but it is so important for young people to read them and understand what others their own age lived through. This is a perfect, respectful, warm and wise example.

Some more fantastic recommends from last term...

Beverly, Right Here

By Kate Dicamillo

This is a little gem of a book.

Although quite short, quick and easy, it’s lack of pages take nothing away from the thoughtful and sensitive writing. You really do feel as if you are reading something worthwhile and yet it is accessible for everyone.

Fourteen year old Beverly has run away from home but knows that her mum probably won’t even notice and care even less. She quickly finds a job and somewhere to stay, but try as she might, she just can’t seem to keep people from making their way into her heart.

Honestly, this book is beautifully written with lots to think and talk about. (However it is also enjoyable to just ‘read’ as a story). It has a slight edge to it that stops it from becoming twee but has real warmth and affection too.

Although third in a series of books, each focusing on one of a trio of friends, it can easily be read as a stand-alone story.

Oh and don’t be put off by the cover, I don’t think the UK or US editions really represent the story very well at all( in my humble opinion of course !)

The Day I was Erased

By Lisa Thompson

Maxwell Beckett is annoying, Maxwell Beckett has always got something to say, Maxwell Beckett is trouble but Maxwell Beckett can also be kind and caring.

Things have hit hit rock bottom. His parents are arguing non stop and he ruins what should be one of the best days of his life.

He goes to visit his neighbour, Reg, to talk about his troubles but something very strange happens and Maxwell Beckett is erased from his life, no one remembers that he ever existed at all. Whatever is he going to do?

This is a fun read and I definitely would recommend this, especially for those who like Tom Gates but would like to read something a little more challenging.

Boy in the Tower

By Polly Ho-Yen

I picked up this book to read because it has been recommended to me by a couple of different students and I did really enjoy it.

It is a sci-fi adventure story at its core but also has emotional issues of depression and of being a young carer too. It is written for students from Year 5 onwards, but the older the students are, the more they will understand and be able to empathise with the characters to a much higher level.

An environmental disaster is erupting across London, strange, other worldly plants are sprouting up and buildings are starting to collapse.

However, Ade cannot flee the city like most other people because his mum is unwell and refuses to leave their flat. Therefore, Ade must learn how to survive and cope with being on his own by being tremendously brave and resourceful in the face of disaster.

This is a thought provoking, unsettling (especially with our current situation) read, but quite compelling and uplifting too, I'm very glad the students encouraged me to read it!

'Nevertell' by Katharine Orton

Another story set in wartime but with a magical twist...

The book is set in snowy Siberia and starts in a Russian prison camp, at the time of Stalin's rule.

'Nevertell' is a lovely magical fantasy, I loved it and read it in nearly one sitting.

An easy read suitable for younger readers, at times a bit cruel but overall a delight.

'Orphans of the Tide' by Struan Murray

This quirky adventure story is perfect for those who enjoyed Philip Pullman's 'Northern Lights' or Philip Reeves 'Mortal Engines' series.

The Ickabog

by J K Rowling

This author doesn't need much introduction, and from what Mrs Elliott writes in her latest review it's another winner :)

This is a wonderful fairytale - I loved it!

Cornucopia is an idyllic place to live, until the children's scary bedtime story, about the mythical, ferocious Icakabog, suddenly becomes a reality and fear takes over the land.

But Daisy Dovetail just isn't sure what to believe, what is really going on?

This story is aimed at younger students but it really can be enjoyed by all, boys and girls from 8 - 80!

As you would expect, the writing and language used is brilliant, the characterisation is great, the villains are evil, corrupt and vain, the heroes are courageous.

The story itself is simple and can be read as such. However, it has so many themes too - good versus evil, abuse of power, corruption, grief, hope, courage, truth and lies. Plus, a great moral, love brings more love, hate only brings more hatred.

I highly recommend that you give this a read sometime soon!

'One for Sorrow' by Zoe Sugg and Amy McCulloch

Another great book from the incredibly popular team that brought you 'Girl Online'...

'This is an easy read, enjoyable, mystery/thriller and would be perfect for those who are fans of Sophie McKenzie's 'Girl Missing'. '

Due to the content of this book we would normally recommend it for our Year 9 and above section. However, I have bought it for my niece in Year 8 and I think she will really enjoy it. Please make sure you have parental/carer permission before reading this book (permission forms are available from the library).

'The Haven' by Simon Lelic

Mrs Sherwood's review reflects her love of this book...

'I loved this book, I was disappointed when I finished it. Its very fast paced non stop action all the way.'

Some of our students taking part in this year's 'HOGWARDS' have also really enjoy it...

'This is an excellent book.' Grace Year 9

'Gripping start - the story goes straight into the action.' Max Year 11

'High Rise Mystery' by Sharna Jackson

For fans of a good 'old-fashioned' murder mystery...

'Although a great story line, it is the two main characters Nik and Norva that make this such a brilliant and enjoyable read. They bring their world to life in such a way, that I had to keep reminding myself that they were actually fictional characters, and as soon as the book was over I started to miss them...'

Wonderscape

by Jennifer Bell

Well, this was fun!

An adventure story and a sort of a mash-up of 'Jumanji', 'Ready Player One', and 'Horrible Histories'.

Three kids, inadvertently, find themselves in an I-RAG (an in-reality adventure game), and to make things even more complicated, they realise that they have been flung a few hundred years into the future. However, to get back home, they just have to complete the game and win...

Easy right?

This is really enjoyable; fast-paced, with great characters, great writing and is for everyone to enjoy.

So all you 'gamers' out there, put down your controllers and pick up this book instead!

Latest releases by popular authors...

From one of the most popular author's at Plymstock comes a brand-new series...released this summer 'Robin Hood' is the perfect holiday read to prepare you for the sequel due to be released in the new year!

Who doesn't love a bit of David Walliams? Check out his new book 'Code Name Bananas' :)

I know I spend most of my life telling you to read something other than 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid', however, I would be remiss in my duties as a librarian if I didn't mention the release of his new book...and we can't fault the author's dedication to get teens reading!

Another fantastic instalment from the much loved Robin Stevens and her 'Murder Most Unladylike' mystery books...

Old favourites that just get better with time...

For fans of the film 'Jurassic Park' and the book 'Hunger Games' this is the perfect mash up of a dystopian, prehistoric adventure

One of my favourite series of all time (which you know if you have spoken to me for more than five minutes). A brilliantly written zombie-esque thriller. Not for the faint hearted, but a fantastic read if you don't mind a bit of horror...

Another fantastic book that leads the way for an even better series. The action literally starts from the first page...

'ONE MINUTE THE teacher was talking about the Civil War.

And the next minute he was gone.

There.

Gone.

No 'poof'. No flash of light. No explosion.

If you want a book series that you just can't put down, this is the one for you. The beauty of books like 'I Am Number Four' by Pittacus Lore is once you've read it you'll just keep on reading the next one, and the next one, and the next one...
