WORLD BOOK DAY 2022

Welcome to Narnia

We were so excited to welcome students and staff back into the library to celebrate our favourite day of the year... World Book Day! This year students walked through the wardrobe into Narnia from The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

World Book Day was a triumphant day where students and staff alike paid homage to some of literature’s great characters with visits from Miss Trunchbull from Matilda by Roald Dahl, The Madhatter from Lewis Carol’s Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and one of Tolkien’s intimidating Orcs kept everyone in check. The day was filled with lots of joy and community support with awards given out for the best costumes, with first place awarded to Year 8 student Eleanor O., as Peter Pan’s Shadow.

Plymstock Laureate

For the first time ever, Plymstock School has named its first ever Laureate!

Through a 500-word creative writing competition run through the library and English department students Years 7-10 could enter in the running to become the Plymstock Laureate, the official writer for the school!

With nearly 50 submissions across the school, Year 10 student Jess G. was named the winner with Year 7 student Nathaniel M. awarded runner up. The school was lucky enough to host the Plymouth Laureate of Words, Laura Horton, who presented the awards and discussed her role as the official writer for the city of Plymouth and her career as a playwright.

Author Visit: Tom McLaughlin

"This year, local author and illustrator, Tom McLaughlin, visited Plymstock School for World Book Day. Tom spoke to two groups of year 7s about his experience with writing.

Tom started out as a political cartoonist for Western Morning News using his incredible drawing skills to produce funny cartoon drawings of politicians. He is now a successful author who illustrates and writes all of his own books himself with some of the main titles including the “Accidental" Series.

Tom spoke about his struggles with dyslexia throughout his childhood and how this made writing and reading difficult. However, Tom's ever-growing imagination led him to following his passion and exploring his ideas through writing as well as drawings. Overall, I found Tom Mclaughlin inspirational as he spoke about trying hard to achieve your goals. He also drew two characters using his I-pad which the students seemed to find very cool! "
