In Photo 1, you will delve into the essentials of photography, covering composition, film processes, and digital editing. The course will also provide an in-depth understanding of the Elements & Principles of Art, and how artists utilize them to create impactful artworks. You'll find practical applications for the skills acquired in this course in your day-to-day life.
These classes are designed to provide an introduction to the arts, helping you develop stronger creative and artistic skills. Please note that this class is not a "blow-off" class or an “easy A.” You will need to invest time and effort to succeed.
I firmly believe that people aren’t simply born “good” at things, including art.
For instance, individuals are not born "good" basketball players.
It takes hours of practice to develop those skills. All skills, including artistic ones, are cultivated through practice, opportunity, taking risks, and more practice.
My goal is to help you learn new art techniques in a safe environment. You will discover how to see art and design in the world around you. As we brainstorm, think outside the box, and take risks, we will learn together how to tackle various challenges while acquiring new artistic skills. I am excited to have you join me on this new adventure!

Grading
Formative Assessments (Practice) 20% of your grade - practice, rough drafts, practice sheets, sketchbook work and quizzes. These assessments will represent 20% of a student’s final quarterly grade.
Summative Assessments (Assessment of learning) 80% of your grade - major assignments, tests, final drafts, and final projects. Summative assessments provide measurable evidence of learning and will be counted as 80% of a student’s final quarterly grade.
Missing assignments will be promptly marked with a M in IC or in GC.
As an educator, it is my job to assess students based on effort & growth. People often say, “but I am not good at art”, but the truth is, anyone can get good at anything with significant focus & effort. Mistakes are essential in art! It is the only way to learn & grow. Mistakes are welcome in my room. The learning happens, however, when students push themselves with the experience of their mistakes, allowing themselves to grow and improve their grades.
You are graded on effort, time on task, seriousness, willingness to work through mistakes and understanding.
Projects: Assignments will be teacher-directed prompts. In these projects, students will be learning very specific skills. Creativity will be used, but in beginning levels, skill is paramount! Guidance will always be available to guide students to success. Most projects will be graded as a test score at 100 pts. Late projects will have points deducted. If students are absent, it is the students responsibility to look in Google Classroom to see what work they missed and review missing work with the teacher. Students will work at home to finish. Students get 1 day grace for each day absent working outside of class.
Late Work: Late summative projects will be marked down 10% EACH week past the due date.
Absences: YOU are expected to make up missing assignments on YOUR own time. Communication is key! Communicate with your teacher. You will need to schedule a time to come in to work on summative projects if you miss studio time. You will receive a 1 day extension per EXcused absence for make-up work with late penalty.
Critique & Reflection: An essential part of artistic growth is to get feedback and adjust work to push toward excellence. Students are expected to participate in and accept the constructive feedback given. This activity will be structured in a “conversation about art” format.
Heads up! You will be exposed to and will be using chemicals that could be dangerous if you misuse or mishandle them. You will also be using very expensive chemicals. YOU are expected to follow the safety guidelines and equipment handling procedures that are modeled to you in class or in video(s). You will also sign safety handling training forms, noting your safety training. Failure to follow safety in handling procedures will result in being banned from using equipment and materials, financial liability for loss, broken equipment, and a failing grade for the assignment. Please respect the photography room and understand that it is a privilege to use the photography space.
Thank you! Mrs. Gedert
