Below are some frequently asked questions by students and parents throughout their service learning experience.
Where can my service learning be completed?
It can be completed at any local non-profit, a community event or for an individual in need as organized through a federally recognized 501(c)3. However, these all need to be pre-approved by the coordinator. Hours MAY NOT be earned during school hours.
If I am an 8th grader, when can I begin my hours?
The first day of summer AFTER 8th grade
How do you turn in service hours?
Hours can be turned in to the service learning office or emailed directly to Mrs. Myatt at myattchristina@pleasval.org.
What if I want to volunteer somewhere that isn't on the service learning list?
Email Mrs. Myatt PRIOR to beginning hours to receive approval.
If I complete my 9th/10th service learning hours early, can I start on my 11th/12th hours before junior year?
No, you can begin your 11th/12th hours the summer AFTER 10th grade. Many students go above and beyond the minimum amount of hours.
Do I have to complete a certain amount of hours each year?
No, you can complete the hours anytime during the 2 year requirement. The first deadline for 9th/10th requirement is the end of 1st semester during your SOPHOMORE year. At that point you must have 15 hours completed. The deadline for 11th/12th requirement is May 1st of senior year.
How many places do we need to volunteer at for our 9th/10th hours?
You can volunteer at as many 501(c)3 non profit organizations as you would like to for your 9th/10th hours.
What's the difference between 11th/12th hours and your 9th/10th hours?
9th/10th requirement is done at as many non profit organizations as you would like. 11th/12th requirement is at one or more non profit organizations based on a theme.
Does everything need to be pre-approved?
Yes. Anything that is posted on the service learning website, sent via Infinite campus, or is on the bulletin board outside the office is already pre-approved.
When does paperwork need to be turned in by?
Paperwork should be turned in on a monthly basis. This will help us (and you) track your progress and you will not lose the paperwork.
