In our #WeArePlainedge PreK-5 STEAM program, students celebrate our annual STEAM Dot Day. After reading The Dot by Peter Reynolds which celebrates courage and creativity while fostering a growth mindset, each grade is immersed in a special artistic experience encouraging students to "Make a mark and see where it takes you!" Each grade's creations are showcased on various bulletin boards and walls throughout the school. Students participate in a building-wide gallery walk organized by our elementary STEAM Team.
EDGE of the Arctic
This was a special opportunity for many PreK-Grade 5 families to experience several Arctic-themed centers including a virtual field trip to the Alaska Zoo. In addition, the Plainedge Planetarium center allowed PreK through Grade 5 students to have the opportunity to travel to the North Pole to experience the Alaskan night sky.
EDGE of the Ocean
Pre-K through Grade 5 students had the opportunity to travel "Under the Sea" with the Texas State Aquarium. A scuba diver took students under the sea to explore sea creatures and wildlife. Students were able to ask live questions throughout. High School performers choreographed their own under the sea performance. All students were empowered, and continued to share their empowerment after the event!
Earth Day Student Robot Connection is a special opportunity each year for many 3rd graders in our district to connect while building their coding skills programming Dash and Dot and other robots at many Earth Day themed stations. Students meet new friends as they collaborate on coding teams and problem solve together. Fifth grade and High School students are coding coaches and assist with the stations and third grade teams. Students have a blast while coding and learning together!
Every year Plainedge Public Schools celebrates the importance of
Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics
in our world. In 2021 and 2022, students in Grades K-8, with their families, had the opportunity to participate in various activities from the comfort of their own home. The week culminated in a virtual field trip to the San Diego Zoo and the Maritime Aquarium.
Each year PreK through grade 8 students are invited with their families to attend Family STEAM Night. Families sign up for two STEAM related workshops that they attend together. Workshops include Solar Oven S'Mores, Mindfulness Calming Jars, Journey Into Space, Forensic Fingerprinting, and more! In addition, some other opportunities that have been available over the years include taking a family Greenscreen photo, trying the floor piano, visiting an interactive Best Buddies station, attending our fifth grade STEAM Arcade and more.
In February 2024, Plainedge was chosen to host the ASSET meeting. Administrators and teachers from across the island visited the Eastplain STEAM Studio, Greenhouse, Outdoor Garden, Planetarium, and library to learn more about the many opportunities students experience during the Plainedge STREAM Program.
Our Plainedge STREAM Team strives to collaborate and network with educators across Long Island to continually learn about new opportunities for our students. We are proud that we have been selected to present at many technology related conferences including the following:
