The Personal Health & Growth and Development unit (4th/5th the Reproductive System) focuses on keeping our bodies healthy including social-emotional health (keeping our bodies safe), growth and development of our body, and good hygiene. Topics discussed begin basic in K-1 and add a bit more content as we spiral up the grades to fifth to keep discussions age appropriate.
A few weeks before this unit is taught, you will receive a district letter that highlights the lessons to be taught at your child’s grade level. This letter includes an “opt-out” form which allows the parent to communicate clearly with the teachers what lessons their child should NOT participate in. Parents can request their child be given the choice of an alternative self-study assignment on a health topic other than the identified lessons or just an alternative location for personal reading or homework.
The videos used during this unit for 4th and 5th grade have been updated (2023-24 school year). We will continue to show these videos separately.
Mrs. Wallace/Mrs. Skiba will team teach the girls while Mrs. Forrest/Mrs. Schaefer take the boys and continue with their music/or art curriculum. The next day, Mrs. Wallace/Mrs. Skiba will team teach the boys while Mrs. Forrest/Mrs. Schaefer will take the girls and continue with music/or art curriculum.

Always Changing and Growing Up (Girls)-4th Grade
Always Changing and Growing Up (All)-5th Grade (same video for both boys and girls)
During this video, we have students write their questions on a notecard anonymously. We collect the note cards and read through answering questions that align with the video. If a question is asked that we not covered in the video, or isn't appropriate, we suggest they ask their parents/ caregiver as they would be better to answer.
These letters will be sent out at least 3 weeks before the lessons take place.
If you wish your child to opt-out of any lesson, please print and return the letter with the opt-out lessons marked. We will ensure that your child will have an alternative setting and/or activity for the noted lesson.
