K-2: Where our food comes from (plant and animal sources), categorizing into food groups (MyPlate: fruit group, vegetable group, protein group, grain group, and dairy group )
3-5: The essential nutrients (fat, protein, carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals, water), identify and read food labels (calories, essential nutrients, ingredients), and creating a well balanced snack/meal.
We want students to use their knowledge about food and food groups to make healthy choices to FUEL the body.
Please note the following definitions of vocabulary that are used :
1. A calorie is a unit of measure of energy in food (we do not teach counting calories),
2. A diet is the type of food you eat (often related back to kid interest of herbivores eat plants/ carnivores eat meat/ vegetarians don’t eat meat- “Raja at the STL Zoo eats a diet of grasses, small plants, fruit, and roots.” We do not teach restricting food/calories. We do use terms such as anytime foods and sometimes foods (used by healthteacher.com sponsored by Mercy). “Anytime” foods describe foods that are healthy to eat anytime and “sometimes” foods might be high in salt/unhealthy fat/sugar content, and we eat them sometimes.
3. Fat is needed by the body for energy, to cushion bones, and brain function. When asked, fats are explained as healthy fats (avocados and nuts) and unhealthy fats (deep fried, etc.)
Finally, you will NEVER hear the words fat or skinny used in our physical education setting or health class.
We will incorporate learning about the Digestive System. Students will learn about the organs of the system as well as how food passes through to bring fuel to the body. Students will play their favorite Food Island game. Again this year, we will finish the unit with the Digestive System Obstacle Course.
During this unit, as with all health units, lessons will be blended with our physical education activities. Additionally, we attempt to use video clips, apps (The Human Body by Tiny Bop), and trade books. We try our best to link useful information, as well as much of our teaching resources, on the Pierremont health and physical education website so we might work together with parents to provide our students with a positive health education.
