Rates of Change

POSSIBLY THE MOST IMPORTANT FORMULA YOU WILL NEED!!!!

SPEED = DISTANCE / TIME

(same as)

                  DISTANCE

SPEED =    ___________

                      TIME

Sometimes, the 's' in the formula is replaced with a 'v' !

Why?  'v' stands for velocity.

Look at the picture below.  It provides you with the 3 forms of the formula, each telling you how to calculate any of the 3 quantities.

Speed, distance, and time are all quantities.

Units are ways to measure a quantity.

You might be familiar with the speed unit - MILES PER HOUR

Kilometers per hour is another unit.

Feet per second is another unit.

Miles per minutes is yet another.

A SPEED THAT WE'RE FAMILIAR WITH EXPRESSED 3 DIFFERENT WAYS

60 mile/hour (mi/hr) (mph) = 1 mile/minute (mi/min) = 88 feet/second (ft/sec) (fps)

The 3 formulas provided by the triangle memory device are:

s = d / t     which means that to find speed, one must divide the distance by the time

d = s x t    which means that to find distance, one must multiply the speed by the time

t = d / s    which means that to find time, one must divide the distance by the speed
