Composition I

  • Composition I is a writing-centered ½ credit course. Students will learn the fundamentals of writing by using the Five Introduction Methods and ACTS (Attention Getter, Connector, and Thesis Statement). Students will read critically learning how to use Annotated/Critical/Close Reading Strategies and write in a variety of organizational patterns while learning to use the MLA Style of documentation (parenthetical citations and synthesizing quotations). We will also learn conclusion techniques. All of these techniques will be combined to write quality papers. The material used for reading will be a mixture of fiction and nonfiction texts and stories. Students will be writing every day, in a notebook of their choice, as we dive into different types of writing. Students will write one or two college essays that can be used for scholarships and college applications.
