Wildfires, floods, severe weather, and other emergencies can develop quickly in the mountains. You may be unfamiliar with local roads, evacuation zones, or emergency procedures, so knowing where to find official information before an emergency can make a big difference.

Before You Head Out

A few simple steps can help you stay prepared during your visit:

• Save PitkinEmergency.org on your phone for evacuation maps, incident information, and official updates.

• Know your transportation options. If you don't have a vehicle, familiarize yourself with local transit and pay close attention to evacuation instructions.

• Keep your phone charged and enable emergency notifications.

• If you're staying at a hotel, lodge, vacation rental, or campground, ask about emergency and evacuation procedures.

🟢 READY — Level 1

Be aware and prepared.

An emergency may affect your area. Monitor official information, know where you're staying, and think about what you would need if conditions change.

🟡 SET — Level 2

Be ready to leave.

Conditions may be changing quickly. Gather your belongings, check official evacuation information, and be prepared to leave at a moment's notice.

🔴 GO — Level 3

Evacuate now.

Leave immediately when directed. Follow official evacuation routes and instructions from emergency personnel. Do not delay.

Enter the street address of your hotel, vacation rental, campground, or other lodging to determine whether your location is affected.

During an emergency, continue checking the map because evacuation areas and conditions can change.

Don't know the address where you're staying? Ask your hotel front desk, property manager, host, or lodging provider.

If You're Asked to Evacuate

If officials issue an evacuation order for your location:

1. Leave promptly.

2. Take essential belongings, medications, identification, and your phone.

3. Follow the evacuation route and instructions provided by local officials.

4. Do not use closed roads or attempt shortcuts.

5. If you're staying at a hotel or other staffed lodging, follow instructions from staff and emergency officials.

6. If you don't have transportation, check official emergency information for transportation and evacuation assistance instructions.

Do not wait until you see smoke, fire, flooding, or another hazard before leaving.

Exploring the Outdoors?

If you're hiking, biking, camping, skiing, or visiting areas outside of Aspen:

• Know the name of the trail, recreation area, or location you're visiting.

• Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return.

• Check weather and emergency conditions before leaving.

• Keep your phone charged, but remember that cell service can be limited in mountain areas.

• Never enter an area that has been closed because of an emergency.
