Pitkin County moves out of Fire Restrictions Sep 12, 2025 – Please remain cautious
Stage 1 fire restrictions will be lifted in Pitkin County Sep 12th, 2025 at 12:00am. Wildfire risk remains—practice fire safety daily.
Open Fires: Allowed only in designated fire grates in developed recreation sites. Fires in permanent fire pits or fire rings at private residences may be allowed.
Smoking: Smoking is prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle or building or in an area cleared of all combustible material.
Fireworks and Explosives: Possessing, discharging, or using fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices is banned.
Spark-Producing Devices: Welding, torches, and engines without spark arresters are restricted.

Open Fires: Building, maintaining, attending, or using any fire, campfire, or stove fire is prohibited. This includes fires in developed recreation sites, campgrounds, and even on private property.
Smoking: Smoking is prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or in an area cleared of all combustible material, or in a designated smoking area.
Fireworks and Explosives: Possessing, discharging, or using fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices is banned.
Off-Road Vehicles: Driving or parking vehicles off of established roads or trails are restricted, especially in areas with dry vegetation.
Internal Combustion Engines: Operation of equipment powered by internal combustion engines, such as chainsaws, is restricted, especially during certain hours of the day.
Welding and Torch Use: Welding or using torches with open flames is prohibited unless in a cleared area and with a fire extinguisher readily available.

Stage III – Forest Closure
Area Closure:
National Forest System lands, Colorado State lands, and Pitkin County Open Space lands are closed to all entry, except for specific exceptions.
Open Fires:
Building, maintaining, attending, or using any open fire, including campfires, is prohibited.
Smoking:
Smoking is prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle or building or in designated smoking areas.
Fireworks:
The use of fireworks, including professional displays, is prohibited.
Other Prohibited Activities:
Depending on the specific agency and area, Stage 3 restrictions may also prohibit the use of certain internal combustion engines, chainsaws, welding, or other activities that could pose a fire hazard.
