Wildfires and other emergencies can change quickly in Pitkin County. Knowing what to do before, during, and after an evacuation can save lives. Pitkin County uses the Ready, Set, Go framework to help residents and visitors prepare and respond effectively.
Being “Ready” means taking steps now so you can act quickly when needed.
Sign up for emergency alerts (Pitkin Alert / ReachWell / Everbridge)
Create a family emergency and evacuation plan, including pets and livestock
Pack a go-bag with at least 72 hours of essentials: Medications, Important documents, Water, food, and clothing, Phone chargers and backup batteries
Know multiple evacuation routes from your home, work, and school
Make arrangements for people with access or functional needs
Keep your vehicle fueled and ready
When conditions worsen, you may be placed on Pre-Evacuation (Set) status.
Stay informed through official sources: Pitkin County Emergency Management, Local law enforcement and fire agencies
Monitor weather, fire behavior, and emergency updates
Review your evacuation plan with household members
Gather family members, pets, and livestock; move animals to a safe location if possible
Pack your vehicle, park facing outward, and be ready to leave quickly
Keep your phone charged and alerts enabled
This is your warning to get ready to GO.
Evacuate immediately when directed
If an evacuation order is issued, leave without delay.
Follow instructions from emergency personnel
Use designated evacuation routes
Do NOT delay or attempt to gather additional belongings
Check in with family members and notify others you are leaving
Check on neighbors if it is safe to do so
Listen for updates from emergency officials
If you need assistance evacuating, call 911
Pre-Evacuation (SET): Be prepared to leave
Evacuation Order (GO): Leave immediately
