AVID

What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID, is a national program that prepares students for admission to a four-year college or university.  In Plano, students can start the AVID program in 7th grade and continue with it through 12th grade.  AVID provides students with  the skills needed in order to be academically successful.  AVID has been instrumental in preparing many student for success in high education.

In the AVID elective, students challenge themselves in rigorous classes.  They are taught how to take and process notes, study collaboratively, manage time, and ask probing questions as well as read, write, and research effectively.   AVID tutorials are a big part of the AVID elective.  Students participate in tutorial sessions with college and adult tutors.  These tutorial sessions provide support for academically rigorous courses.  Throughout the year, students are exposed to information regarding colleges through tutors, guest speakers, field trips, and research.  Scholarship opportunities are also discussed and researched.

How AVID works

Students are taught skills and behaviors for academic success. Academic support is provided through collaborative groups and tutorials.  Strong relationships are key as they create a safe and positive environment to encourage students to reach their personal achievements.  Students learn success occurs through hard work and determination.
