Fifth Grade Science
What we have covered:
Matter, mass, atoms, physical and chemical changes, conductors, insulators, flammability, heat and expansion, cold and contraction,
Motion, Forces, Position, Reference point, Distance, Speed, Formula for Speed = Distance ÷ Time, Acceleration, Friction, Gravity, Isaac Newton's Laws (Law of Inertia, Law that states force, mass and acceleration are related and Law that states every action has an equal but opposite reaction).
Earth Systems - Last week, we have began reviewing the Water Cycle (hydrosphere and atmosphere) and how those two systems interact with each other. We learned that the sun is the driving force of the water cycle starting the evaporation process where water from the earth that is collected in lakes, oceans, rivers, ponds, streams, puddles, glaciers, etc...is heated by the sun and enters the atmosphere as water vapor. Water vapor goes through condensation (gas to liquid) forming water and ice crystals that make up the clouds. Water and ice crystals form in the clouds and once they are full, precipitation in the form of ice, rain, hail, sleet, mist is pulled by gravity back down to the earth repeating the cycle. As a part of the evaporation process, we learned that when plants receive water, once it has nourished the plant, evaporation in the form of transpiration occurs from the plants leaves returning as water vapor through the openings in their leaves.
