Advanced Topics in Literary Studies
The 2024-2025 academic year marks the second year Advanced Topics in Literary Studies has been offered as a Form VI English elective. The course explores the decisions that scholars make when constructing chapter-length critical analyses. It surveys the lenses scholars use to analyze literature, how to decide which lens(es) will inform literary scholarship, and how to undertake a research project. Students read a sample of literary theorists, as well as scholars who use these theorists in their work.
Special Feature: A Study in Form
This collection demonstrates a student's process. In the first paper, a senior enrolled in the fall-semester Advanced Topics elective applied critical theory to her reading of The Great Gatsby, a text she first read in her junior-year American Literature class. The student next practiced short-form writing that specified the need to make her thinking visible in the spring-semester Literature and the Common Good elective. In the same class, the student went on to apply what she learned in both courses to compose a longer, theory-informed comparative essay.

Independent Senior Project (ISP)
Every May, Pingry's seniors immerse themselves in capstone projects of their choosing. In addition to being self-crafted, these experiences are self-directed and often inter-disciplinary. This year's features are vastly different yet capture the creative spirit of ISP. As you browse these pieces, please note the role of mentors, diverse sources, and the inspired yet unconventional ways that research can guide a project.
