Description:
The goal was to make a freestanding structure as tall as possible while still making it stable for >1 minutes. The only materials allowed were straws and tape.
Brainstorm:
When we started building, half of the team started building a stable structure, while the other half tried to make a structure as tall as possible. Our plan was to combine the two to create a strong-based structure that was still tall.
Procedure:
To build the base, some people started building squares to make cubes and used the cubes like "blocks" to make towers. For the height of the building, we stuck the straws inside one another to chain them together. Finally, we taped the straw chain to the base to finish our structure.
SOUL Reflections:
S - The cube base was strong and held up the straw chain well
O - The straw chain wasn't stable enough and kept falling over, so we had to make it shorter. However, because we decreased the height, our tower wasn't tall enough. Also, the base was not strong enough to hold the straw in a stable way.
U - I learned that to build a tall structure, you need a stable base. Otherwise, the building will fall and your structure will not be tall or stable.
L - I think that working in uncoordinated groups definitely affected our productivity. Also, we should have planned out our structure more before building.
WISCR - I think the "S" for "Self-Motivated" in WISCR applied to our team the best. We started the project quickly, and everyone was on-task and driven to complete the project without needing much guidance from others.
