Description: The goal is to use 3D Design to print and create two 'CorkPals'. Guidelines on the project include: The finished product cannot be larger than a 2" x 2" x 2" bounding box; the design must be original and completely your own work; the finished product must be able to stand on its own; and ideally, there is a story or connection between the two animals created.
Brainstorm: After looking through the requirements, I decided that I wanted to make a cat and mouse for my CorkPals project. Cats and mice have a very well-known correlation, and I felt like recreating this common archetype in a more personalized way. However, first, I had to print testing rings to make sure that the attachments would fit on the cork. After a few iterations of testing, I found that both of my corks had a 21mm diameter on one side and a 22mm diameter on the other.
(White Ring is 21mm diameter center circle)
(Pink Ring is 22mm diameter center circle)
For the cat design, I opted for a vertical version, whereas for the mouse design, I used a horizontal version. The cat design would be able to stand on its own because of its verticality, but the mouse design would have to have legs or supports of some sort to hold itself upright. I also added a "• x •" face and curly tails for a more distinctive and individualized look.
(Blue Part is the cork)
(Black Parts are the caps for the cork)
Procedure: For both designs, I used a hemisphere placed on a ring for the head and a flat cylinder placed on a ring for the bottom. Both heads would use two spheres and a "x" shape for the face, and both bottoms would have curly tails. I also decided to add paw marks to make the design extra special. The only difference was that the arms would be at different angles to make each design more stable and balanced. These were the first versions of both designs:
These were the designs after they were printed:
Most of the design was good, but the mouse tail was too fragile and broke off. So, I had to recreate the tail of the mouse and reprint it. Also, the paw marks didn't really print clearly and were hard to see. Unfortunately, I did not have the time to reprint everything and redesign the paw marks.
Top to Bottom: New Design, Failed Prints, Final Product
I made a new tail design that was larger and more stable by doubling the tail onto itself
Unfortunately, the new design was still too fragile, so I added a cone for more surface area between the tail and base.
After re-editing, I finally printed out my final design without flaws:
Reflections:
S- I really liked the final product and the designs. I think they were very cute and I was extremely happy with the way they turned out. I also like how personalized it was and how it really represented my own style of design.
O- I think that I could have been a little more productive during the project. I spent too much time focusing on certain details that really weren't that important to the final result. In addition, I felt like I could have given more thought into my designs. On a more specific note, I didn't like the fact that I didn't have enough time to choose the colors that I wanted.
U- This project taught me a lot more about time management and learning to best utilize my time. When one thing was unavailable at the time, I could work on other things and touch up designs. Also, I think this project made me think more critically about what I was doing and why I was doing it.
L- For this assignment, I felt like I wasn't given enough time to finish creating something detailed and intricate. I had time crunch and had to cut out certain things for the sake of having enough time to finish the rest of the project.
WISCR- While I was working on this project, I think I embodied the Insightful and Critical Thinking and Self-Motivated aspects of WISCR. I really thought deeply about the thing I was creating and how I could make it better throughout the course of this project. Furthermore, I was very self-motivated and I personally think that I really improved on my proactivity during the assignment.
Story: The story behind how Cat and Mouse met; One day, Mouse crept out of their hiding hole to sneak some cheese away. Mouse noticed that the people that were usually there were gone, so this was a perfect opportunity to take some of that wonderful cheese Mouse had been dreaming of. But, just as Mouse was about to sink their little paws into the yummy cheese, they heard the sound of the door opening. Then, they heard the sound of a cat meowing. Mouse had never seen a cat before, but they knew that cats were dangerous. But, as Mouse began to run back to their hiding hole, they were spotted by the cat. Cat had never seen a mouse before, and they wondered what kind of new friend this was. But for some reason, the little mouse kept running away. But, after hours of coaxing and pleading, Cat finally convinced Mouse to come out of their hiding hole, and they became best friends forever.
