Description: In a group of 4 or 5, build the tallest structure thats is sturdy and stays up for at least 1 minute. the structure is built solely on straws and 2ft of masking tape. It must stand alone, and the only thing that touches the floor.
Two of the WISCR letters i think apply to this project are the "I", because this activity requires you to brainstorm ideas that will fit for this project. The other one is the "C" because you need to be able to communicate clearly to express your ideas and to listen to other people's thoughts to have the best result.
Brainstorm: We brainstormed ideas for the tower for about ten minutes. Some of them were:
Square base
Putting straws into each other
Triangle base
Jenga base
Eiffel tower shape
Procedure: We decided to go for a Jenga-style base. When we had about 3 minutes left, everybody saw that the jenga base wouldn't work, so we rushed to try to put the straws into each other, and then on the base, to add height. But because the base was a Jenga style base, it did not support the straws going into each other idea. Because of this, our straws did not stay up.
S: The strengths of the tower are only the base, because nothing else really worked. The base was definitely stronger than the others', but in the end our structure still wasn't tall enough.
O: If we had thought about multiple ideas, instead of focusing on just one, and had more time and materials, I think that we possibly could've won, and definitely would've gotten a taller structure.
U: I learned that if you don't think, and analyze every idea you have, it is highly unlikely you will the get the correct prototype, and even more unlikely that your idea will work, or at least work well.
L: Some limitations I encountered in this project were: not being able to express my ideas freely, not having my ideas listened to, or even considered, not having many materials, not having a lot of time, and having to make the structure stay up without any assistance.
