This page highlights all the steps done to complete our Valentines Day Soap Project. In this project, we create a soap on either TinkerCAD or Fusion 360 that is for a friend or loved one. I chose to make a soap for my dad.
Brainstorm:
This is my brainstorm for the soap project that I drew on an app called Notability on my iPad. I decided to go with a heart around the outside as a soap base. Then, I drew a pancake in the middle because my dad is always kind enough to make me breakfast every morning before school. Last, I added "You're flipping awesome!" because 'flipping' relates to the pancakes.
Procedure:
I decided to use Fusion 360 for this project. First, I imported a png of a plain heart into Fusion and traced it. Then, I did the same thing with a png of a stack of pancakes, tracing it in Fusion. Last, I extruded the sketches.
I added the text that said "You're flipping awesome" on the heart. Now, it is time to print using Bambu Handy.
First Print:
This is my first print attempt. It worked out great, however I forgot to increase the height of the actual heart. It was set to 0.4 inches tall in Fusion 360, so I changed it to 1 inch tall. This print took around 25 minutes.
Second Print:
This is my second print. I raised the height of the heart which made it look a bit better as a soap model. This print took around 35 minutes.
Soap Mold:
This is the 3D print after I put the silicon mold around it. We rolled together a white paste and a blue paste to create the mold, and then we wrapped it aorund our 3D print. After this drys, we will have a silicon mold to fill with the soap that will harden and be ready to gift to my dad.
Adding the Melted Soap:
This is my mold after we added the soap. Mrs. Tran melted soap cubes and added the scent we desired before we pored it into our molds. I chose a lemon scent and mixed yellow into the liquid soap. In the next class after break, we will collect our soaps when they are completely hard.
FINAL PRODUCT
This is my final product. The soap its self turned out great, howeveer the text is a little hard to see because it isn't very tall. The soap smells really good and I like the pattern I chose of a swirly-yellow color. The pancake stack turned out better than I thought and the way it is a different color from the rest of the soap is cool.
SOUL Reflection
S- Strength. I think my main strength this project was my ability to trace the heart and the stack of pancakes. When I imported the PDF of the pancake stack, I knew it would be very time-consuming to trace. However, I ended up tracing the whole pancake stack in less than 10 minutes.
O- Opportunities. Something I could've done better this project was double checking the size of my design before printing. On the first attempt of my print (It is not on my portfolio because it broke before I could get a photo) , I didn't realize the measurements were off on Fusion 360 on my grid and when I 3D printed it, it was way too big. Ms. Tran had to take it out of the printer before it was finished because the measurements I printed it at were larger than the grid of the 3D printer base.
U- Understanding. This project expanded my usage abilities and understanding of TinkerCAD and Fusion 360. Before this project, I was very confused and hesitant to using Fusion 360 because I found it very hard to navigate through all of the different functions. However, after lots of practice and muscle memory developed, I am way more confident in using Fusion 360.
L- Limitations. A limitation that may have held me back is the fact that I forgot to save my work on Fusion 360 after almost I finished tracing the entire stack of pancakes, something that took an entire class period to finish. When I found out, I was nervous that I wouldn't have finished on time and would have been very far behind. Luckily, after lots of practice on Fusion 360, I felt very confident that I could redo the design. Surprisingly, I finished it that period and I am up to date with the rest of the class. If I would have saved my work, I probably would have had more time to finish my portfolio and get ahead of the class.
WISCR Reflection:
WISCR- Some WISCR traits that I believe I demonstrated while making the soap for this project was I for Insightful Thinker and S for Self-Motivated. During the brainstorm, I was struggling to come up with an idea, so I drew out a mind map of the things I appreciate about my dad. This made me insightful thinker and determined to find an idea about what I wanted to base my soap design off of. Additionally, I was self-motivated this project because I worked diligently and stayed on task in order to complete the project on time and to the best of my abilities.
