Description: We were asked to build a tallest structure that can stand for at least one minute. The structure is built solely on straws and two feet of masking tape. It must stand alone, and the only things that I can touch is the floor. We were put into groups of four or five, and we had thirty minutes to think of ideas and make it.
Brainstorm: We brainstormed many ideas for a sturdy base, and we ended up choosing two trapezoids for the base. We also brainstormed the structure for the tower, and we decided to put many straws together and had it go through the base and taped to the floor.
Procedure: We changed a lot of our plans last minute as we experimented with how the straws could connect and what would stand up by itself. For the base, we decided that putting straws into each other would save a lot of tape, and it worked really well! We had put a lot of time into our base, so we had very little time to build the tower. We decided to connect a bunch of straws together and attach through the base to the ground. It started to fall over, so we added some supports that attached to the base! Then, when we measured it, our group won with fifty five inches!
SOUL Reflection:
S: What worked: I think that our strategy was really good, and it ended up winning! I also think that we had really good teamwork!
0: What didn't work: Something that didn't work was our original strategy, which was to use a triangle base. We switched to a trapezoid base when we started building because the triangle base wasn't stable.
U: What did you learn: Something that I learned is how to work together in a team. It was a lot more efficient when we divided up the work. For example, Joyce, Andrew, and I worked mainly on the base, Alex built the tower, and Wardin worked on the supports.
L: What prevented you from having a successful project: Something that prevented us from having a successful project is that we took way too long brainstorming and on the base, so we were rushing at the end.
WISCR: I think that the letter that applied to my team was W (well rounded) because we were very organized and worked together very well. We each used our own strengths to contribute to the project.
