This entry level course is designed to introduce students to the color guard activity. Students will learn multiple aspects of color guard, from dancing to spinning, as well as expression and emotion through performance. Students will be taught basic dance technique as well as flag and rifle fundamentals. Students are expected to wear approved PE clothes to class and athletic/running shoes. There will be several required performances throughout the year.

This yearlong course is for students continuing in color guard and builds on skills learned in the Workshop I level class. Students will continue to hone dance and equipment techniques as well as learn intermediate skills, with more in-depth production style performances. This class begins the competition level of performances with participation in winter guard during the second semester. Students are expected to wear approved PE clothes to class and athletic/running shoes. Equipment for at-home practice is required. Occasional after school practices prior to performances will be required.

Guard Ensemble is our advanced color guard group for middle school students. Students will further their their techniques and performance abilities through daily work in school, as well as after school practices. Students are expected to wear approved PE clothes to class and athletic/running shoes. Equipment for at-home practice is required. Performances will include campus and community events, and a more competitive winter guard season in the second semester with possible travel opportunities. Attendance at all rehearsals and participation in all performances is mandatory.
Who? Grades 7-8 with previous color guard experience, audition required
Cost: $150 Conservatory Class Fee + $500 Program Fee. Additional equipment fees and supplies required.
The Conservatory Class Fee covers equipment for class use, Conservatory Coaches, and additional program expenses. Performance attire, gloves, and equipment for at-home practice are required at an additional cost.
**All levels of Color Guard will have the option to fundraise through the Cadence Band Boosters. Fundraising opportunities are available to assist with color guard related program fees and trip fees. Class fees and all deporits are not payable through fundraising. Sibling discounts, scholarship opportunities, and payment plans are available.**
New to color guard? Want to check it out and see what you think? The Workshop I class is the place to start! No experience required. We will teach you everything you need to know! The only requirement is a positive attitude and willingness to try something new. All instruction time and learning will be done during class time. Performances are the only after school commitments for this class.
Workshop II is our second level class for middle school students who have completed Workshop I and would like to continue in our program. Students will continue to learn new skills while increasing their performance experiences. Workshop II will also begin competition level performances with participation in winter guard during second semester. These competitions are Saturdays from February-April. All students at this level are expected to have their own equipment for at-home practice.
Color Guard Ensemble is for middle school students looking for greater skills and the more competitive experience. This group will perform along side the Elite team in school and community events, as well as a competitive winter guard season in the spring that includes custom flags, costumes, props, etc. Students will have the opportunity to work with guest choreographers an instructors. On occasion, this group may travel outside of Nevada for competitions as well. Practices will be after school 1-2 days per week, with 2-3 weekend choreography camps sometime in December/January. Winter Guard competitions are Saturdays in February, March, and early April. There will be no practices over Winter Break or Spring Break. All rehearsals and performances are required as part of class.
Students and their families should complete the Academic Plan & Elective Request Form and select the desired color guard class as their first choice. These forms are available on our school website.
Any students planning to audition for the Elite or Ensemble teams must complete the corresponding Audition Requirements in Google Classroom by March 1st. Students who do not complete or meet the audition requirements will not be placed on the team. Returning middle school students not in Ensemble Color Guard will be scheduled into Workshop II.
