Early Childhood Education

A child's first 5 years hold the keys to success. ... Between birth and 5 years old, 90 percent of a child's brain development occurs, and at a lightning-fast pace. Every sight, smell, sound and sensation makes an impact.

Welcome to Early Childhood Education. I look forward to having you in my class!

I am excited to begin my 17th year of teaching and my first year at Pickens High School! I have taught many grade levels including Pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and first. I earned a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education at the University of West Georgia. I am thrilled to be able to share my experiences from teaching early childhood for 16 years, with my students at PHS. I have two daughters who will be attending PHS as ninth and tenth graders and a son who will be in second grade at Tate Elementary.

Completing the Pathway

Students who finish and pass courses I, II, and III complete the ECE career pathway. In addition, students in ECE III take an end of pathway assessment. Upon completion of the test, students with a passing score will be considered "workforce competent and industry certified"! They will receive a medal and certificate in recognition of their accomplishments!

The Early Childhood Education pathway at Pickens High School prepares students for occupations in teaching and working with young children. Students at PHS are given the opportunity to participate in several courses. ECE courses I, II, and III expose students to a plethora of topics that include, but are not limited to: the foundations of child development, physical development, cognitive development, social-emotional development, health and safety, history of education, licensing and accreditation requirements, basic CPR/First Aid/Fire Safety, and early brain development and its implications for early learning.
