Bio for Mr. Oubre

Michael Oubre is the band director at Pickens High School in Jasper, Georgia and also serves as the Pickens County Schools Fine Arts Director. The 2019-2020 year will be his 20th year of teaching and his ninth year as Director of Bands at PHS. Previously, Mr. Oubre was the band director at Winder-Barrow High School in Winder, GA from 2007-2011. Mr. Oubre came to Winder-Barrow in 2000 as the assistant band director. A native of Sumter, SC, Mr. Oubre graduated from Furman University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree. While at Furman, Mr. Oubre served as trumpet section leader for the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and the Paladin Regiment and also served as the Drum Major. He then went to The University of Georgia to complete a Master of Music Education degree in 2000 with an emphasis in conducting. While he was at UGA, Mr. Oubre was a graduate assistant with the Redcoat Band and University Bands program. In 2007, Mr. Oubre completed the requirements for a Specialist Degree in Instruction and Curriculum from Piedmont College in Demorest, GA.

Mr. Oubre has been active in the Georgia Music Educators Association District 13 and has served as the District Band Chair twice and as Co-Organizer of the Large Group Performance Evaluation for seven years. Mr. Oubre served as the State Chair for the National Band Association, Georgia Chapter for nine years. He served as the District 9 GMEA Band Chair for two years and is now the District 9 Chair for 2018-2020. He served as the District 13 Honor Band (11-12) Organizer and Host and has also served as the host for the Solo and Ensemble event. He has served as the District Secretary/Treasurer. He is an active judge in Georgia for marching and concert band events. Mr. Oubre taught trumpet at ENCORE! Music Camp, leadership at Joycliffe Summer Camps, and served as the clinician of the Symphonic Band at the Furman University Band Camp in the Summer of 2009, the clinician for the Floyd County Honor Bands in 2012, and the Greenville (SC) County Honor Band in 2018. He also serves as a leadership clinician for various high schools.

The Symphonic Band at WBHS performed by invitation at the University of Alabama Honor Festival in February 2010, the Honor Bands of Georgia at Columbus State in January 2011 and at the Kennesaw State University Concert Band Invitational in March of 2011. The Pickens Band performed at Kennesaw State University in March of 2012, 2014 and 2016 for the same event. Mr. Oubre has received the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association on two occasions. Mr. Oubre has presented clinics at the GMEA State Convention twice, UGA and other band events. He is also very active in marching band and concert band adjudication in Georgia. The PHS Symphonic Band performed at the Music for All Southeastern Regional Concert Festival at Georgia State University in February of 2015. At Pickens High School, Mr. Oubre is also the Fine Arts Department Head and serves on the Leadership Team.

The Symphonic Band at WBHS received Superior ratings (3) and one Excellent rating (Masterwork classification) under his direction and the marching band earned its twenty-seventh consecutive Superior rating in Festival Performance in the Fall of 2010. The WBHS Symphonic Band was also recognized as a Commended Winner in the National Wind Band Honors as part of The Mark of Excellence/Foundation for Music Education Project.

Mr. Oubre is a member of the Georgia Music Educators Association, MENC, the National Band Association, PAGE, Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity. He was elected as a member of the American School Band Directors Association in the summer of 2016. Mr. Oubre is married to Leslie Still Oubre, President of Still Family Farms and Office Manager for Still Construction. They have one son, Jonah, who is in the tenth grade this year.
