Think of standard Gemini as a "Generalist"—it knows a little bit about everything. Gems allow you to turn Gemini into a "Specialist." A Gem is a custom version of the AI that you configure once with specific instructions, a defined personality, and a set goal. Once created, it sits in your sidebar like a dedicated app. When you click it, it already knows who you are, what you need, and how you want your answers delivered. Gems are designed to save time on everyday tasks. By "pre-loading" your preferences, you skip the repetitive typing and get better results instantly. Gems are available to all Staff and students in Grades 9-12.
How to Create a Gem
Open Gemini (gemini.google.com).
Click on Gems in the sidebar on the left side of the screen to enter the Gem manager.
Click "New Gem."
Name it: (e.g., "7th Grade Math Coach").
Give Instructions: (e.g., "You are an expert math teacher. When I ask you a question, explain it using real-world sports analogies. Never give the answer directly; guide me to it.")
Click Create. Your new specialist is now ready to use anytime!
